Taste of the Town: Reader help needed to find homemade Italian sausage
August L. Darata emailed with what might seem like a prosaic query.
“I am looking for homemade Italian sausage, without nitrates or fillers, to barbecue or cook at home,” he wrote. “Can you direct me to some retail store in Vegas carrying Italian products? Whose sausage is the ‘taste of the town?’ ”
OK, it was the last line that got me. I know there’s plenty of Italian sausage being made in-house at numerous delis, butcher shops and other markets across the valley, and I know my own favorites. But in the spirit of this column, I thought I’d turn it over to the readers for suggestions.

Eddie Carr didn’t specify if he wanted restaurant or supermarket sources for Vienna hot dogs, and readers supplied both. Penny Bonanno and Van Bohrer recommended Windy City Beefs and Dogs at 7500 W. Lake Mead Blvd., with Bonanno adding, “it’s the best Chicago hot dog in town,” and Bohrer pointing out that the restaurant carries other Chicago-style foods in an atmosphere filled with Chicago photos and memorabilia. Marge Phegley recommended Hot Dog Heaven at 87 E. Lake Mead Parkway in Henderson. And Ann Brown said he can find them at Glazier’s Food Marketplace, 8525 W. Warm Springs Road. …
For Bernie Toolson, Brown said Contadina Sweet &Sour Sauce can be found at Glazier’s as well. …
For William Shettler, Carol Rinehart emailed that she spotted Betty Crocker Butter Pecan cake mix at the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 2310 E. Serene Ave. …
For Barbara Tolson, who’s looking for Snapple juices, Rinehart said she found Snapple kiwi-strawberry and Mango Madness at Smart &Final at 4213 Boulder Highway. …
And while we didn’t get a response to a query from Lee White, who’s looking for broccoli and cheese, Kiev and Cordon Bleu stuffed chicken breasts by Antioch Foods, we did get a suggestion from reader William Isaac. Isaac wonders if White has tried the same varieties made by Barber Foods, adding that he finds the Barber brand to be higher in quality, if more expensive. And he said he finds the Barber stuffed chicken breasts at Smith’s, Vons and Albertsons.
