Taste of the Town: Readers spot Kona coffee
Gotta love that Kona coffee, which has a rich, full-bodied flavor stemming from its growing conditions on the Big Island of Hawaii. Unfortunately, Kona’s pretty pricey — among the most expensive coffees in the world — so I wasn’t surprised when Taste of the Town regular Jim Guynup emailed in search of a source for it “at a reasonable price.” I’m not sure what’s reasonable — that’s open to wide interpretation — but readers have a few local sources.
“The best place is the ABC stores,” emailed Claude Black. “There are eight in town, and they are all over Hawaii on every island, so you get the real stuff.” Rosemarie McKie wrote to report spotting the coffee, “imported direct from Hawaii,” at Walgreen’s for $8.99. For Sam Chinkes, who’s looking for yellow split peas, Dave Levesque reported finding them in the bulk section at Winco (80 N. Stephanie St. in Henderson or 6101 N. Decatur Blvd.) and Sprouts (3365 E. Tropicana Ave. or 4020 S. Rainbow Blvd.) and McKie found them at the 99 Cents Only store at 1200 S. Decatur Blvd. …
For Jo Anne Crain, who’s looking for a local source for hull-less popcorn, Laurie Brenner said Pirate’s Booty Popcorn, which is made of corn and rice extruded into a puff, is available at Vons, Albertsons, Food 4 Less and Whole Foods Market. And Jaci Look at A Simple Life, 5025 S. Eastern Ave., emailed to say she carries hull-less popcorn among its almost two dozen types of popcorn (black? strawberry?) as well as lots of holiday-oriented products. …
And for Debbie Lettis, George Oliver emailed that Duncan Hines angel-food cake mix is available at Food 4 Less at 1941 N. Decatur Blvd.
