Pierogies are widespread — if you know where to look

Time was when little old ladies in Eastern European-expatriate strongholds across the country would make and sell pierogies for church fundraisers, and when I moved to the valley in the late ’90s, we even had a church here that did. Those days are gone, but her fellow Taste of the Town readers did find Mrs. T’s Pierogies for Cindi Maciolek.

Colleen Sams and William Isaac emailed that they’re available at Albertsons and Isaac also suggested Vons. Jack Lappin, Jill Ramsey, Donna Soda and Rick Brandeburg found them at Smith’s. Ann Brown, Karen Kissam and Donna Ruehle found them at Wal-Mart Supercenter and Brandeburg also found them at the commissary at Nellis Air Force Base, for those who have commissary privileges. And if that seems like they’re available everywhere, I think the problem is they can be hard to spot; I’ve seen them with the frozen bread at one Smith’s store and Soda said they’re in the kosher section of another Smith’s.

For Carol Dwyer, who’s looking for shredded Swiss cheese, Megan Hubble and Sams said Sargento brand is available at Albertsons.

For Frank Bean, who’s looking for Limburger cheese, Jan Visser and Rick Skarda reported finding it at Whole Foods Market (with Skarda adding that the stores usually have domestic and sometimes imported versions), Ron Line and Jack Lappin emailed that they found it at Smith’s and Claude Black found it at Sprouts at 10000 W. Sahara Ave.

For Mike Kane, who’s looking for canned shoestring-cut beets, Steve Epstein emailed that he found them at Smith’s at 9851 W. Charleston Blvd. and Lorraine Leker said that she found them at Winco at 80 N. Stephanie St. in Henderson; there’s another Winco at 6101 N. Decatur Blvd.

For Joanie Cerff, who’s looking for 10-minute Cream of Wheat, in the yellow box, Cathy Ajeman said B&G Foods emailed her that it’s been discontinued (although it’s still listed on the company’s website), but that it’s still available by the case at www.amazon.com.

More on bialys: Penny Goldin recommended Life’s a Bagel deli at 2223 N. Rampart Blvd.
