Lamar Odom spends 35th birthday recovering in LA hospital

Lamar Odom turns 35 on Friday, but it's not the birthday he probably envisioned.

The former basketball player is still recovering after being found unresponsive at the Love Ranch brothel in Nevada in October. After being initially treated in that state, he was transferred to a hospital in Los Angeles, where he continues to recuperate.

Not much has been shared recently about Odom's condition, but L.A. Daily News Lakers writer Mark Medina tweeted Wednesday, "I'm told Lamar Odom's health has improved enough to have visitors. Metta World Peace plans to visit Lamar later today."

The fact that Odom is even around to celebrate his milestone is a miracle to some.

Employees of the brothel told 911 dispatchers that he used had cocaine his first day there. Owner Dennis Hof disputed that report, saying that any drug use happened when Odom was partying in Las Vegas before he arrived at the Love Ranch.

A woman also said she saw Odom take 10 herbal supplement tablets over three days. Early on during his hospital stay, things seemed dire.

Reportedly at his side the entire time has been his estranged wife, reality star Khloe Kardashian.

She told People magazine that "The fact that he woke up was definitely a sigh of relief for everybody.

"Every hour is different," Kardashian said. "It goes up, and it goes down, but he's awake. He's alive, and that's all I wanted was for him to be OK."

Although the pair have reportedly called off their divorce, Kardashian was clear that they are not a couple again.

She's currently promoting her new book, "Strong Looks Better Naked."

On Thursday, she tweeted that fans were asking about the cancellation of her New York book signings, but she needed to stay in Los Angeles "for personal reasons."

Kardashian had sweet words for Odom in her book's acknowledgements.

"Thank you to Lamar for giving me some of the best years of my life and for everything you taught me about being strong," she wrote. "Before I met you I felt invisible, and after I felt seen."
