5 great sports movies that hit the sweet spot

Godzilla” is the big movie coming out this weekend, but another film headed to theaters is the Disney sports movie “Million Dollar Arm.”

The film tells the true story of a sports agent who finds two Indian boys who have never picked up a baseball and turns them into major league prospects.

With the true story headed to the screen this weekend, we decided to take a look at five sports movies that will hit you right in the feels.

The Pride of the Yankees

The 1942 classic “The Pride of the Yankees” tells the story of the life and career of baseball legend Lou Gehrig.

The movie will inspire you, uplift you and make you cry until you’ve run out of tears.

Gary Cooper is spot on as Gehrig, and the story itself is incredible. While the film certainly feels a little dated, it still has the oomph where it needs it and the storytelling power it did over 70 years ago.

We Are Marshall

The football movie “We Are Marshall” stars Matthew McConaughey and recounts the true story of the Marshall football team that tried to keep the program running after a plane crash claimed the lives of much of the coaching staff and most of the team.

This is not the greatest sports movie, but it delivers an emotional punch to the gut that will stick with you for days.

The story is powerful and beautiful and is all but guaranteed to get the water works going.

Remember the Titans

The 2000 film “Remember the Titans” stars Denzel Washington and retells a powerful story of racism, brotherhood, forgiveness and football. So, it has pretty much everything.

The movie is a bit cliché at times, but it’s too entertaining and heartwarming to care. The movie inspires you to be something greater and will probably make you want to be a football coach even if you’ve never watched a game before.

Warrior

You haven’t seen “Warrior”? Well, then find it, watch it and fall in love with it.

The 2011 movie stars Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton and it is one of the best sports films ever made.

The movie is based on the true story of two brothers who are down on their luck and enter an MMA tournament with a $5 million purse.

It sounds pretty straightforward from the description, but this movie is so much more than what you see on the surface. The film is one of the most inspiring, uplifting, touching and honest movies you’ll ever see.

Hardy and Edgerton are excellent in the film, but the real star is Nick Nolte as their father. You’ll never look at the man the same way.

“Warrior” is the best kind of sports movie and it will make the burliest of men weep like a child, and you know what? When it comes to this movie, there is no shame in that. Show off that soft side, big guy.

Rudy

Don’t deny it. When you read “Rudy” you immediately started chanting “Rudy, Rudy, Rudy.”

“Rudy” is one of the most beloved sports movies of all time because it’s the classic underdog story that makes you feel like you’re capable of absolutely anything.

If a kid that’s a 5-foot nothing, 100 and nothing and without a speck of athletic ability can excell, then you can get that promotion, run that 10K or make that difficult recipe in that cookbook. You can do it!

“Rudy” takes ahold of your feelings tendon and keeps a firm grasp until the credits roll.
