Dog co-stars in ‘Beginners’

The movie: "Beginners"

When: Opening Friday at Village Square

Cast: Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, Melanie Laurent

Director: Mike Mills

The story: A morose young man finds his world turned upside down when his father shares two revelations: He has terminal cancer -- and he's gay.

The buzz: Warmly received on the film festival circuit since its debut in Toronto last fall, this comedy from writer-director Mike Mills was inspired by Mills' own family background. And while McGregor and Plummer have earned praise for their performances, so has one of their co-stars: a Jack Russell terrier whose "dialogue" is revealed through subtitles.
