First Look: ‘Amigo’ explores cultural conflict

The movie: "Amigo"

When: Opening Friday at Village Square

Cast: Chris Cooper, Joel Torre, Garrett Dillahunt, Ronnie Lazaro

Director: John Sayles

The story: In 1900, the mayor of a Filipino village becomes caught in the murderous crossfire of the Philippine-American War, when U.S. troops occupy his village and demand he help them track down guerrilla fighters -- led by the mayor's brother.

The buzz: In his 17th feature film, writer-director John Sayles once again explores history, and cultural conflicts, with a drama that marks his fifth movie with Cooper, following 1987's "Matewan," 1991's "City of Hope," 1996's "Lone Star" (the high point of their collaboration) and 2004's "Silver City."
