10 songs you’ll be sick of by summer’s end

Which 10 songs will you be sick of by the end of summer? Well, let’s see … are you tired of “Can’t Feel My Face” by the Weeknd yet? No? Hang tight, you probably will be by the end of summer. Ditto “Lean On” by Major Lazer feat. MØ and DJ Snake, “You Know You Like It” by DJ Snake and Aluna George, “Where Are Ü Now” by Skrillex and Diplo with Justin Bieber, “Cheerleader” (Felix Jaehn Remix) by Omi, “Hey Mama” by David Guetta and Nicki Minaj, and “Good for You” by Selena with A$AP Rocky.

According to rankings compiled by Shazam (the tune-identifying app, not the superhero — although that would be rad if he served as our own personal musical adviser), the tracks listed above are among the most searched songs in Las Vegas.

As you’re probably already aware from the narrow playlists on terrestrial radio, everything is driven by analytics these days, as opposed to the specialty programming of outlets like XM and Apple Music, the latter of which is subject to the sensibilities of sharp musical minds like Zane Lowe, who’s already giving great spins to acts like Gallant and Leikeli47, whose tracks “Weight In Gold” and “F**k the Summer Up,” respectively, should be popping up on radars real soon.

That curated approach stands in sharp opposition to traditional radio. “The idea that DJs are just picking songs because they like them is so antiquated,” Radha Subramanyam, an iHeartMedia exec told the Atlantic’s Derek Thompson, whose insightful piece, “The Shazam Effect,” details how traditional programming is formulated by figures from sources like Shazam, in addition to calculations compiled by Nielsen Audio, with its Portable People Meters and Hit Predictor, which reportedly pinpointed all but two of the top 50 hits last year.

Out of curiosity, we bumped Shazam’s chart for Las Vegas up against the most-sought-out songs in the United States and then held that up against the current rankings on Billboard’s Hot 100 and the mainstream movers on Hit Predictor, and yeah, the results, as you might expect, are very similar, as you’ll see below. Have a look.

Oh, before you get into all that, though, speaking of Shazam, last week, the app started sharing the top songs searched by various artists, like Tove Lo, who Shazamed “Reaching Out” by Erik Hagelton, and Usher, who apparently discovered that Can is responsible for the tune “Vitamin C.”
