Get wrecked with Alkaline Trio
April 26, 2013 - 1:04 am
Their songs read like suicide notes but sound like pep talks.
Simultaneously downcast and upbeat, the Alkaline Trio’s shadowy pop punk turns heartache and depression into something hummable (sample song titles from “My Shame Is True,” the band’s new disc: “I’m Only Here to Disappoint,” “I, Pessimist,” “The Torture Doctor”).
“I’m a total wreck,” singer-guitarist Matt Skiba announces on “Midnight Blue,” but he doesn’t really like it, as the song zips by with the jittery energy of a wicked caffeine buzz.
Slashed wrists have seldom seemed so inviting.
