The List: Latest DVDs, CDs, books, July 16

A look at some of the DVDs, CDs and books hitting stores this week:

DVDs

“42” (PG-13): Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) breaks major league baseball’s color barrier, with an assist from Brooklyn Dodgers executive Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford), in this fact-based drama.

Elsewhere, a New Orleans hit man (Sylvester Stallone) partners with a Washington, D.C., detective (Sung Kang) to avenge their partners’ killings in “Bullet to the Head” (R). And five 20-somethings in a remote cabin become possessed after reading from a Book of the Dead in “Evil Dead” (R), a remake of the 1981 cult classic.

Topping today’s TV transfers: “Damages: The Complete Fifth Season,” “Hell on Wheels: The Complete Second Season,” “Orphan Black: Season One,” “Alphas: Season Two,” “Misfits: Season Three,” “Shameless — Seasons 1 & 2 — Original UK Series,” “George Lopez: The Complete Third Season,” “Matlock: The Ninth & Final Season” and “Combat!: The Complete Fourth Season.”

CDs

Philip Anselmo & The Illegals, “Walk Through Exits Only”: Former Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo has been in plenty of different projects over the years, but he’s finally gotten around to releasing his solo debut.

As expected, it’s an intense listen, with Anselmo spitting his words in listeners’ faces like an angry drill sergeant addressing some lazy recruits.

There’s a track on the album titled “Usurper Bastard’s Rant,” and that’s exactly what the record sounds like.

Also in stores: Sara Bareilles, “The Blessed Unrest”; Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, “White Teeth, Black Thoughts”; Court Yard Hounds, “Amelita”; Mayer Hawthorne, “Where Does This Door Go”; The Icarus Line, “Slave Vows”; David Lynch, “The Big Dream”; Pet Shop Boys, “Electric”; Robert Randolph & The Family Band, “Lickety Split”; Seven Witches, “Rebirth”; Sick Puppies, “Connect”; Cody Simpson, “Surfers Paradise”; and The Verve Pipe, “Are We There Yet?”

BOOKS

“The English Girl” by Daniel Silva: Assassin and spy Gabriel Allon must rescue Madeline Hart, a political star and lover of Britain’s prime minister, after she is kidnapped.

Also this week, an unreliable narrator and his friend discover a treasure map, embarking on a search for the Golden Monkey through the stinky foreign land of Honolulu in humorist Jack Handey’s “The Stench of Honolulu.”

Also hitting shelves: “Downfall” by Jeff Abbott; “First Sight” by Danielle Steel; “Hunting Eve” by Iris Johansen; “The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P.” by Adelle Waldman; “The Mediterranean Caper” by Clive Cussler; “My Lunches with Orson” by Peter Biskind; “Rose Kennedy” by Barbara A.
