QUICK TAKES

Bassist injured

Chi Cheng, 38, the bass player for the Deftones, is in a San Jose, Calif., hospital after a car accident. The band's singer, Chino Moreno, said Cheng was injured in the crash Monday in Santa Clara, Calif. According the Sacramento Bee, Moreno said he didn't have many details, but that it's "very serious." The Deftones have been together since 1988 and released their first album on Madonna's Maverick Records label in 1995. The band earned a Grammy Award for best metal performance for a song from its 2000 album "White Pony."

ABC's interested

Could "King of the Hill" be making a move? The showbiz trade papers have reported that ABC is interested in picking up the long-running animated series, which was canceled by Fox. ABC is launching "The Goode Family," an animated show from "King of the Hill" co-creator Mike Judge, later this season. "King of the Hill" could end up pairing with the new show, but it would take a while. Because of the long production cycle for animated shows, it probably wouldn't make it onto ABC's schedule until at least fall 2009.

Couple calls it quits

"The Bachelorette" couple DeAnna Pappas and pro-snowboarder Jesse Csincsak are no more. According to a video posted on their joint Web site, DeAnnaandJesse.com, Csincsak said Pappas had broken up with him when he picked her up at the airport in Breckenridge, Colo. "I did everything in my power to try and make this work," he said on the video. "She's a great person, but she's not willing to try anymore. She wanted something different, I guess. The answer I got was, 'I love you, but I'm not in love with you.' "

Opus lives

Berkeley Breathed wants to reassure any "Opus" fans who were worried the penguin was killed Sunday when the 5-year-old comic strip ended. "Jumpin' Jehosphat," Breathed told the Los Angeles Times via e-mail, "Tony Soprano sleeps with the fishes, which is to say, dead. Opus sleeps with a bunny in a feather bed, dreaming of a more hopeful tomorrow morning." Many readers were worried because the penultimate print version of the strip took place in an animal shelter, and the finale featured Opus being put to sleep in the pages of "Goodnight Moon."

Songs are babies

"Yes, I have plans, but not yet. I'm pregnant with my songs. But someday, yes." -- Colombian pop star Shakira, when asked whether her foundation work on behalf of Latin American children has made her want to become a mother.
