Vegas Valley Book Festival adds events for young people

The Vegas Valley Book Festival will feature a day of activities geared toward children and young adults with readings, panel discussions, arts and crafts, and entertainment beginning at 9 a.m. Nov. 5 at the Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St.

Among the activities, author/illustrator Jorge Argueta will tell stories and recite poetry in Spanish and English on the main outdoor stage at 10 a.m. On the same stage at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Justin Roberts and The Not Ready for Naptime Players will perform "hip kids' music."

Kids ages 12 to 18 can attend author events beginning at 10 a.m. in the Big Top Festival Tent in the school parking lot.

"What's Hot for Teens in Fantasy & Paranormal Fiction" will be discussed by authors Rachel Caine, James Dashner, Becca Fitzpatrick, Sophie Jordan, Bree Despain, Veronica Wolff, Tera Lynn Childs and Rachel Hawkins at 10:15 a.m.

"Contemporary Teen Fiction: The Dark & the Light" will feature author panelists Jay Asher, Daisy Whitney, Liz Gallagher, Stephanie Perkins, Emily Wing Smith and Lisa Schroeder at 11:25 a.m.

"Blending Realistic Fiction with Fantasy" will be the topic for authors Asher, Heather Davis, Cat Patrick, Lindsey Leavitt and Susan Young at 12:25 p.m.

Young adult authors also will attend the Paranormal Ball, which will boast costume and fan art contests, dancing and treats. Tickets are $10 and available at www.vegasvalleybookfestival.org.

The Vegas Valley Book Festival will run Nov. 3-6, with most programs at the Historic Fifth Street School. Most events are free. The Las Vegas Review-Journal is among the sponsors.
