Investigative Reporter
Las Vegas, NV
The Las Vegas Review-Journal, one of the country’s 25 largest metro daily newspapers, is seeking an investigative reporter to produce hard-hitting, government-accountability investigations. We are looking for someone with a track record of impactful journalism that leads to change. Full-time investigative reporting experience is preferred, but we also will consider experienced beat reporters who have a history of delivering top-notch enterprise, investigative and public-records journalism.
This position will round out the Review-Journal’s award-winning, five-member investigative team. Las Vegas is a target-rich environment. In recent years, our stories have sparked indictments at the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the Henderson constable’s office and the Nye County Sheriff’s Office. Other investigations resulted in audits and changes to state law. To be considered, your work should show those kinds of results.
Applicants should have extensive experience with public records requests and computer-assisted data analysis. Candidates who have extensive CAR skills will be given higher priority in the search process. Reporters on the team are allowed significant time to produce long-term projects but also are expected to develop quick turns and shorter investigations
Las Vegas is as dynamic a news market as anywhere in the country, and the Review-Journal is the area’s dominant news source. Southern Nevada is home to about 2.3 million people, plus up to 200,000 visitors on any given day. It is a diverse metro area with a vibrant downtown and cultural scene, and it’s a half-day drive or less to some of the West’s most spectacular outdoor recreation and national parks.
Among many honors, the Review-Journal has captured 46 Best of the West awards over the past six years, and it won two Sigma Delta Chi Awards for deadline reporting in three years. We’re an innovative, collaborative newsroom that was named one of “10 Publishers That Do It Right” by Editor & Publisher in both 2022 and 2023. Additionally, the Review-Journal was the local media honoree at The Poynter Institute’s 2023 Bowtie Ball in Tampa.
The Review-Journal is an equal-opportunity employer and a drug-free workplace. A pre-employment drug screening is mandatory.
To apply, provide a cover letter, resume, references, samples of your best work and a list of five Nevada-specific story ideas that would have you hitting the ground running. Email them to Investigations Editor Arthur Kane at akane@reviewjournal.com with the subject line “Application for investigative reporter.”
