Assistance League’s holiday bazaar raises funds
December 27, 2009 - 10:00 pm
The Assistance League of Las Vegas had a holiday bazaar at the league's facility on West Charleston Boulevard.
The mid-December morning event hosted 250 members plus guests. The Assistance League has served the community for more than 30 years, chartered in 1979 as the 63rd chapter of the National Assistance League. The Las Vegas chapter's members volunteered more than 33,000 hours in 2009.
The holiday bazaar was a social occasion that raised funds for its numerous programs and services to children in need, such as Operation School Bell, which provided new school clothing and school supplies to more than 6,900 children referred by the Clark County School District in 2009.
You Name It Events catered the bazaar and decorated the large meeting room with a snowy backdrop and life-size polar bears that overlooked the table that offered tickets to win a basket of surprises.
Andrea Maffey won the golfers basket, Susie Daseler won the spa and relaxation basket, Lou Schwager took home the wine and restaurant basket, the antique clock went to Sue Taylor. Cindy Sutton received the TGIF basket and Margaret Matherly was the winner of a free-standing wine rack with wine and glasses.
Members, including Mary Laub, Mary McCarthy, Mary Redman, Phyllis Hendrickson, Kjersti Wyatt, Michele Burton, Phyllis Roberts, Sandra Litton, Hope Anstett, Judy Trent, Pat Thompson, Dorothy Turner, Lyndi Snyder, Margaret Purdue-Johnson, Carroll Mueller, Jeanne Bell, Judy Ash, Betsy Rhodes, Carol Stewart and Tina Morgan, joined league president Carolyn Glaser and bazaar chair Amy Tabor in participating in the silent auction.
The board room offered baked goods and the building's foyer was filled with donated gift items from Femail Creations Catalog in Henderson.
Entertainment was by pianist Dave Kowaleski, with accompaniment by Raymond Slcam on the cello. Allen McCarty donated his premier photo booth for guests to pose for holiday photos. More guests in attendance were Charlotte Besuden, Ardie Beeler, Sharon Schmitt, Marianne Slagle, JoAnn Riordan, Dana Wiesner, Bonnie Bryan, Marianne Gibson, Wendy Daseler, Sheila Burns, Cathy Mink, Peggy Cushman, Betty Foster, Mary Morgan and Penny Porter.
