SUPER SUMMER SAFETY FAIRS PLANNED

The city of Las Vegas, in partnership with the Southern Nevada Child Drowning Prevention Coalition and the Nevada Parks and Recreation Society, plans Super Summer Safety Fairs on June 13 at six city pools:

— Garside Pool, 250 S. Torrey Pines Drive, noon to 5 p.m.

— Baker Pool, 1100 E. St. Louis Ave., 4 to 8 p.m.

— Carlos L. Martinez and Darrio J. Hall Family Pool at Gary Reese Freedom Park, 889 N. Pecos Road, noon to 5 p.m.

— Doolittle Pool, 1940 N. J St., 1 to 5 p.m.

— Municipal Pool, 431 E. Bonanza Road, noon to 6 p.m.

— Pavilion Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive, noon to 6 p.m.

GROUPS RECEIVE GRANTS FOR LEGAL SERVICES

The State Bar of Nevada’s Lawyer Referral and Information Service recently announced grants for several Nevada nonprofits dedicated to providing legal services and education to the community.

Local funding recipients were:

— Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, 725 E. Charleston Blvd., for technology and infrastructure upgrades.

— Nevada Disability Advocacy & Law Center, 2828 W. Charleston Blvd., Suite 11, for a disability rights workshop.

— Project REAL, 310 S. Fourth St., for the Your Day in Court program.

— Southern Nevada Senior Law Project, 340 N. 11th St., for a technology upgrade.

— UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway, for the Alternative Spring Break program.

The grant program receives applications annually from organizations seeking funding for a variety of legal services and public service programs and activities.

BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN ADVISORY BOARD HONORS ADVOCATES

The Nevada Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board recently presented awards to individuals, agencies and groups for improving bicycle and pedestrian facilities and safety.

Local recipients were:

— Advocacy/Activist: state Sen. Mark Manendo.

— Individual Employee-Agency: Mike Janssen, city of Las Vegas.

— Agency: city of Las Vegas.

— Bicycle/Pedestrian Organization: Outside Las Vegas Foundation.

— Special Achievement: Sherie Moore and Traci Traasdahl, coordinators for the Clark County School District’s Nevada Safe Routes to School program.

— Nevada Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board Member of the Year: Loy Hixson, Nevada Highway Patrol.

The governor-appointed Nevada Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board was created by the Legislature to advise state agencies on policies, programs and facilities. The board also promotes programs and facilities for bicyclists and pedestrians.

WEST CHARLESTON BOULEVARD PROJECT TO CAUSE LANE RESTRICTIONS

Lane restrictions are set to be in effect through December in both directions along West Charleston Boulevard between Montclair Street and Decatur Boulevard due to a Las Vegas Valley Water District project, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.

District crews are replacing a 24-inch diameter water pipeline that dates to the 1950s. Construction is planned from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, with periodic work from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Left-turn lanes at the intersection of Charleston and Decatur boulevards will be reduced to single lanes. Montclair Street will remain open, but there will be no access to or from westbound Charleston Boulevard.

Northbound traffic on Montclair Street will be restricted to right turn only onto Charleston Boulevard. Motorists turning from Montclair Street onto eastbound Charleston Boulevard can only turn right onto Decatur Boulevard.

Existing access points to some neighboring businesses may be temporarily altered and travel lanes reduced in the construction zone.

FIRE DEPARTMENT PLANS OPEN HOUSE AT FIRE STATION 15

The Clark County Fire Department plans an open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 13 at Fire Station 15, 3480 S. Valley View Blvd.

Summer heat and pool safety are slated to be the theme of the event, which is set to feature jaws of life demonstrations, a fishing derby and tours of fire engines and the fire station.

The next open house is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 8 at Fire Station 16, 6131 E. Washington Ave., with back-to-school safety as the theme.

POOLS TEST NEGATIVE FOR STAPHYLOCOCCUS BACTERIA

Following reports that staphylococcus bacteria was present in the water at public pool facilities, the city of Las Vegas performed testing beyond the health and safety protocols in place at city pools.

No staphylococcus or MRSA bacteria was found following the tests, according to the city. The city said it tests the water in its pools at least twice a day.

Tests were also run in other areas of the city’s pool facilities, including the bathrooms, where there was a positive indication of staphylococcus bacteria on the men’s shower floor at the Municipal Pool, 431 E. Bonanza Road, and the women’s shower floor at the Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive.

The bathrooms were immediately disinfected and power-washed, the city said.

FREEWAY SERVICE PATROL ADVISES PREVENTATIVE MEASURES IN SUMMER

The Nevada Department of Transportation’s Freeway Service Patrol is sharing safe summer driving reminders for travel on Nevada roads.

The patrol reminds residents to check for:

— Excessive or irregular wear and tire pressure.

— Blistered, cracked, cut or damaged belts and hoses.

— Wear and tear on windshield wipers.

— Sufficient amounts of oil, brake, transmission, power steering, coolant and windshield washer fluids.

— Malfunctioning in headlights, brake lights, turn signals, emergency flashers and interior lights.

The patrol also recommends keeping an emergency roadside kit, including items such as jumper cables, a car jack, maps, a first aid kit, a flashlight and nonperishable food, water and medicine.

The Freeway Service Patrol monitors Las Vegas and Reno interstates to help clear freeway incidents, roadside debris or stalled vehicles.

HENDERSON CAR DEALERSHIP PLANS EVENTS FOR NATIONAL SAFETY MONTH

Ford Country, 280 N. Gibson Road, plans special offers and events during National Safety Month in June.

— New car buyers and service customers who visit the dealership can take a safe driving pledge through June. The pledge includes tips on how to reach zero roadway accidents and injuries and reminds people to drive safely. Guests who take the pledge are set to receive two tickets to a House of Blues show.

— The dealership plans to salute military members and all public safety personnel through June with deals on vehicles.

Clinics for free legal assistance and free legal education are planned for seniors in the coming months.

— Legal assistance clinics at the West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd., are set from 1 to 3 p.m. July 15, dealing with debt collection; Sept. 16, covering identity theft; and Nov. 18, focusing on estate planning basics.

—Legal assistance clinics at the Green Valley Library, 2797 N. Green Valley Parkway, are scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. June 17, addressing health care directives; Aug. 19, debt collection; Oct. 21, identity theft; and Dec. 16, estate planning basics

— Legal education clinics at the West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd., are slated from 5 to 6 p.m. June 24, dealing with foreclosure basics; Aug. 26, fundamentals of landlord/tenant law; and Oct. 28, sealing criminal records.

BABY-SITTING INSTRUCTION TO BE OFFERED

American Red Cross baby sitter training for youths 11 to 15 is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. June 23, 25 and 26 at the Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive.

The training includes child and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation, basic first-aid skills and pointers on starting a baby sitter business.

HENDERSON PLANS SUPER SUMMER SAFETY FAIR

The city of Henderson plans to host a Super Summer Safety Fair from noon to 6 p.m. June 13 at the Whitney Ranch Activity Pool, 1575 B Galleria Drive.

The safety fair portion of the free event is slated from noon to 3 p.m., followed by an open swim. Residents can register at any recreation center or indoor pool, at cityofhenderson.com (activity code 336712-00) or at the event.

The fair aims to educate parents, grandparents and guardians about infant and child safety in and around water. Participants will receive information on safeguarding their homes, preventing accidents and how to respond to an emergency.

The city is hosting the fair in partnership with the Southern Nevada Child Drowning Prevention Coalition.

FORUM ON TRAFFIC AWARENESS PLANNED JUNE 20

Free safety forums on various topics are planned monthly at the Mob Museum, 300 Stewart Ave., through a partnership with the Metropolitan Police Department.

Forums are slated from 1-2 p.m. June 20, dealing with traffic awareness; July 18, gang awareness; Aug. 15, district attorney court procedures; Sept. 19, K-9 operations; Oct. 17, missing persons; Nov. 21, Metro Volunteer Program; and Dec. 19, emergency preparedness.

The presentations are also scheduled to be live-streamed at themobmuseum.org.
