BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
Since becoming a mom, we've noticed a few alterations to Ashlee Simpson-Wentz's style. And we like them. She's reverted back to the edge she first greeted us with when the pop star launched her first album. In taking a step back, however, she's taken huge steps forward thanks to the drop of sophistication the pop singer has introduced into her wardrobe.
As she walked the green carpet at The CW Network 2009 Upfront party, Jessica's little sister proved she's not so little anymore. A pencil skirt tends to have that effect. It's the way she did the pencil skirt, though. Like black eyeliner, it can quickly go from classic to trashy if placed in the wrong hands. It all comes down to fit. If it looks as though someone is pulling the skirt from the back -- and simultaneously exposing more dimples than Shirley Temple -- you've officially committed a fashion foul. A pencil skirt should showcase shape only when there's movement, which Simpson-Wentz's slight hip shift demonstrates.
Up top she chose another basic, a crisp, sleeveless button-up with black ribbon trim. Unlike the skirt, this one's hard to screw up. Going for the ol' tuck-in is yet another reflection of the new, grown-up Ashlee.
Before the yawns set in an oversized chain necklace saves the day. The chunky, heavy look that the spring runways cramped models' necks with reminds us that our favorite lip syncher hasn't strayed completely from her rebellious style.
If that weren't convincing enough, she brings the point home with her patent leather hot pink and black gladiator sandals that cover black pedicured toes. The whole look is every bit the contradiction as Simpson-Wentz's attempt to sell bubble gum flavored rock-n-roll. We prefer the taste of this a little better, though.
