Bet on Black

Wearing head-to-toe black doesn't necessarily mean you've got a therapist on speed dial. The dark ensemble Reese Witherspoon recently wore for a German promotion of "How Do You Know?" is proof of that.

The Academy Award-winning actress shines in black. And, it's a sincere shine. Not the kind that comes in the form of a canary yellow Nina Ricci cocktail dress shortly after a divorce is announced. That number will forever top the fashion revenge lists, but it's the kind of dress you reach for when you're trying to prove something.

It could be a side effect from the rock weighing down her left ring finger, but Witherspoon looks like a sincerely confident woman these days. Even in a look with a depressing reputation.

Let's start with the LBD, formerly known as the little black dress. It has ruching detail in the midsection, but we doubt a figure flaw called for it. The mother of two puts on her jogging shoes more often than her red carpet shoes. But, the ruching adds a nice touch to a dress that can border on plain without a little detail. The boatneck cut and short sleeves do a fine job of keeping our eyes above the neck, something we'd never see at, say, a Megan Fox premiere.

That's what we love about Witherspoon, though. She wants to be taken seriously as an actress, even when promoting a movie in which she stars alongside Owen Wilson.

The one thing she might've done differently here is given us a nice burst of color. Electric blue booties, a carrot orange clutch -- something to break up the monotony. She's trying to accomplish that with the long chain necklace, which passes, but you can't knock us out without throwing a punch.

The opaque tights and booties in black create the kind of straight line Stacy London and Clinton Kelly ingrain in "What Not to Wear" viewers. It may be style elementary, but when was the last time we saw Witherspoon sitting front row at a Rodarte show? She doesn't take fashion risks, but fashion risks aren't for everyone. Some celebrities are more comfortable walking the line and she's one of them.
