Change of a Dress
We'd like to celebrate one of Coco Chanel's finest creations: the little black dress, or as fashion plates have come to refer to it, the LBD.
As far as our most frantic fashion emergencies are concerned, there's nothing little about it. The same LBD you wore to your great-aunt's funeral can win over future bosses on a job interview and knock his socks off on that first date. We challenge you to name another garment in your closet with more versatility.
And, why is it that this little number always comes to mind first when we want to look and feel our best? We suspect it has something to do with the figure-flattering color. Only Photoshop can camouflage flaws the way black can. The fact fashion runways for fall '09 all appeared in mourning only makes the LBD that much more in demand this season.
The best part about the dress, however, is its indifference to time. Take any LBD Holly Golightly sports in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and put it with a pair of cut-out platform ankle booties. Throw a studded cuff on top of it. Now, add a pompadour and smoky eyes. There you have a dress with time-traveling power.
Take a look at the three LBD's we've selected. Alone, each looks like a simple garment. With a little accessorizing, they assume entirely different identities.
