Coloring Outside The Lines
Fall '09 beauty challenges your comfort zone. It dares you to burst out of that natural look shell and emerge somewhere between the set of "Twilight" and a Cover Girl ad from 1983. Before you do that, however, you must pucker up and smooch the number one beauty trend: red lips. Not near red. Not deep red. We're talking the same red that distinguishes a Christian Louboutin from any other old shoe. Yep, that red.
Once you've got that one covered, you can start twiddling with your hair, which suddenly has a big bump right at your crown. It's also known as the pompadour. Get well acquainted with it now because it's not going anywhere.
Here they are in all their boundary-testing glory, the hair and makeup trends for this fall. And, with them, we've included application and styling tips.
Red Lips
For all the women shaking their heads and insisting they can't pull it off, local makeup artist Kim Katunis (kkmakeup.com), has news for you. "A lot of women are surprised at how much brighter and healthier red lips can make them look," she says. Plus, it's not permanent. If you decide you can't go there, wipe it off and be on your way.
Tip No. 1: Use a matte lipstick. Red can look really sloppy if it bleeds.
Tip No. 2: Start with a nude lip liner to avoid prominent lip lines.
Tip No. 3: Can't brave a true red? Keep this in mind. Warm reds complement blondes, corals look best on redheads and burgundy colors best flatter brunettes.
Tip No. 4: Place your pointer finger between lips, tighten your pucker and pull your pointer out to keep lipstick off your teeth.
Tip No. 5: Blot your first coat and then reapply. The first provides a stain, the second makes it adhere to your lips.
'80s Eyes
All the colors you've been told to use sparingly will suddenly come together this season and create a rainbow on your eyelids. We're talking iridescent purple, canary yellow, hunter green and hot pink. No color combination is too much. In fact, don't stop until it looks like Cyndi Lauper circa "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun."
Tip: According to Katunis, the distinguishing factor here is eyelid to brow line application. Skip the highlighter and go full throttle with your color.
Raccoon Eyes
This is just one of the trends pop culture's recent vampire obsession has inspired. If you're thinking someone simply renamed the smoky eye, you're right and wrong. The smoky look is what you'd be left with after rubbing your raccoon eyes with makeup remover for a good five minutes. Yes, that intense.
Tip: It's all about the bottom line. Take a sponge tip applicator pencil, hold it vertically and run it back and forth under your eyes. That's how wide your under eye eyeliner should run.
Peachy Cheeks
Phew! You've got one trend that doesn't require deep breaths before applying. "It falls in trend with everything else," Katunis says. You can't exactly rock red lips, raccoon eyes and streaks of fuschia on your cheeks all at once. For that, we give thanks.
Tip: If peachy keen never got you going, look for a shimmery shade to add a little punch.
Nude Lips
The word "nude" is a bit misleading here. Reason being, your actual naked lip comes in a bit too dark for the nude lip look. Makeup is required to achieve the nude shade. Did you really think cosmetic companies would put out a trend that didn't require you to give them your money?
Tip: Just a light hue of pink or peach can easily make this one more approachable.
Dark Lips
And this marks the second vampire-inspired beauty trend for fall. Note, it's not siren red and it's not Marilyn Manson black. But it is a hybrid of both. Approach this trend with lots of care and a lip pencil. It can quickly get messy.
Tip: Dark lips can exaggerate thin lips. If yours are on the thinner side, consider a gloss instead of a lipstick.
Pompadour
Gwen Stefani has been sporting one for years. Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash both took a liking to them, too. Even polygamist women have adopted the pompadour. Now, the hair industry wants the masses to jump on this look. It doesn't hurt that red lips and a pompadour are kind of like the peanut butter and jelly of beauty.
Tip: The trick is in making the front look kempt and tidy. To best accomplish that, tease hair from behind to your desired height and then smooth the front layer over the bump. A firm holding aerosol hair spray will come in handy.
Rough Riding Waves
Take the perfect, bouncy waves of seasons past and sleep on them. There you have the waves of fall '09. They're a little tousled, but not in the beach-y way you want them for summer. Some runways even favored a smooth look on top with the curls forming closer to the tips of the hair. So long as they don't appear just-out-of-the-rollers, you're good.
Tip: Don't hold hair in place with the curling iron for longer than half a second. Once you've curled all your hair, run over it with a paddle brush to roughen things up.
Hair Accessories
This trend just saved you from future bad hair days. Designers favored everything from barrettes with netting to feather clips to embellished headbands. If you don't have anything with flair handy, simply take three classic headbands and slightly separate them over your head. It's that easy.
Tip: Keep your hair simple and understated when embracing this trend. Let the hair accessory do the talking.
