Home designers talk trends

If you missed the 2009 Las Vegas Market at World Market Center Las Vegas last week, we managed to sneak away a few tips for you. Three of the industry's leading designers, chosen to participate in the "Ahead of the Curve" webinar, shared their thoughts with us on home design trends. Each of them fall under a different design esthetic and provide here which trends will blow up and which ones already have imploded. Take a look.

Timothy Corrigan

Design esthetic: Comfortable elegance

The next big thing: Comfortable furniture. People aren't wanting to make the trade-off anymore for something that just looks good. Sharp, contemporary furniture is going out. It's about how it works and feels now.

So out, it's embarrassing: Family photos in the living room, metallic or glittery fabrics and karate-chopped pillows. You had to (fluff pillows and then chop them with your hand down the top center) in the '70s and no one does it anymore.

Vicente Wolf

Design esthetic: Sybaritic, comfortable

The next big thing: It's much bigger than what's going in your home with what we're dealing with as a nation. Trends come about when we have the freedom to think about how to dream. We're in reality mode right now.

So out, it's embarrassing: Suites of furniture. Contrary to what some manufacturers still feel.

Laura Kirar

Design esthetic: Modernist with classical roots

The next big thing: We're getting back to nature, but not necessarily in a primitive way. It's now about the material itself. Wood with little finishing, metals with patina, natural fabrics.

So out, it's embarrassing: All of this heavily lacquered, baroque Louis furniture. The whole trend of quirky traditional made-to-look-modern furniture. Let the furniture breathe.
