R&B singer Mary J. Blige’s style should match her success

Oh, Mary. No matter how hard you try, you never quite get it right. We weep for the day your style lives up to the success of your career.
Mary J. Blige is one of those celebrities who proves that money can't buy you style. She seems to have a handle on trends. It's her styling that could use the kind of help her love life once needed.
This ensemble reminds us of her relationship with K-Ci, the R&B singer who originated in Jodeci and moved on to K-Ci and JoJo. Individually, the pieces are fabulous. Together, they're just one big mess.
The overkill of metallic is tacky. And so 2006. The bangles get a pass, though. Not only because they're classic but because they're an MJB signature piece. Remember when she split from producer Sean "Puffy" Combs and posed on the cover of Vibe to promote "Share My World"? The queen of hip-hop soul wore gold bangles in the pictorial and has done so ever since.
What we'd like to see her get away from, however, are the animal prints, gratuitous fur and excessive metallics. We realize she lives in an exclusive community in New Jersey, with Chris Rock and Eddie Murphy as neighbors, but does she have to look so ... Jersey?
Take this purple, one-shoulder ruched number and all its gold accessories. Does it not look like something Teresa Giudice of the "Real Housewives of New Jersey" would wear while dusting her gaudy gold vanity? That's exactly why a superstar with a voice as recognizable and hailed as Blige's should run as fast as she can from it.
That's not to say she didn't pick a flattering dress in a beautiful shade of purple. She definitely did. It's the accessorizing and the predictability that has us shaking our heads.
It's alright. We have faith she'll pull out a hit on her next red carpet.
