Show Us Your Bag
■ Who? Danilo Oribe, world champion flair bartender at Rock & Rita's at Circus Circus
■ Location: Rock & Rita's at Circus Circus
■ Handbag: Nautica duffle bag
■ Are handbags status symbols? My flair bag is to carry bartending equipment and bottles for competitions. No one really judges the bags we carry the same as they would in other industries.
■ What does this bag say about you? It says that I am a flair bartender that is ready to get on the stage and perform. Whether I'm in an international competition or local showcase, it says that I take the competition seriously.
■ If someone found your bag and looked inside, what would he/she think of you? First, they'd probably think that I love drinking or that I travel with all those liquor bottles and tools so I can drink my favorite cocktail anytime. But, if they look further, they will see the rules of the next competition that I am attending or the rules of the last one that I was in (Warsaw, Poland) and then realize what I do.
■ What's the most important item you've carried in your bag? The Legends of Bartending 2010 world champion trophy
■ What's the strangest item you've carried in your bag? A healthy drink that I love called Verve. I carry it with me everywhere I go.
■ Tell us about the first special bag you owned. It was from back in my country (Uruguay) and was my first flair bag. I brought it with me the first time that I came to Vegas in 2004 to take part in a world competition. I was so excited about this trip that, when I landed, I grabbed my other bags and completely forgot it at the airport! It was my first Vegas luck that, when I ran back to the carousel, it was still there.
■ Knockoffs: Love 'em or hate 'em? Honestly, in seven years of traveling to more than 25 countries to perform, I have tried at least 10 different brands and models. I have paid a high price for a brand name one and after the first trip it was falling apart. I just try to find one that I really like, has strong wheels, is big enough and has pockets. Quality is all that really matters.
■ Image is ... important, especially in my profession. You don't have to be stylish to have a good image in my opinion. It is all about how you present yourself.
■ What's in your bag? 1. Trophy (I always carry one for good luck. Depending on how I do in a competition, sometimes I have two.), 2. Practice bottle, 3. Bar towel, 4. Pour spout, 5. Competition rules (I study these around the clock, especially when I travel), 6. Shaker.
