When Haircuts Go Wrong

The summer of '07 brought with it the Beckham bob, the short little 'do Victoria "Posh" Beckham inspired a bevy of women to mimic. It was hotter than the Vegas sun, but come September everyone realized that growing it out was about as awkward as puberty itself.
Two years later we've got a new short and sassy cut that's once again making women hear the snip snip of barber shears. This time we can credit Rihanna for the frenzy. Apparently, you dig her bob with long side-swept layers and have been toting tear sheets of the R&B diva to local stylists to prove your affection. And there's nothing wrong with either of these things.
We at Image would like to warn you, however, that asking for this haircut can pose great risk to your status as a legitimate style maven. If you should stumble into the wrong chair at the wrong salon you could easily wind up with the wrong cut. You could -- brace yourself -- find yourself sporting the Kate Gosselin. Yes, as in the cockatoo cut from "Jon & Kate Plus 8." The two hairdos are separated by miles of style but only centimeters of snips.
If you're shrieking with horror right now than you well understand the travesty. While Rihanna's cut is too cool for school, Gosselin's bipolar hairstyle is as temperamental as the reality star herself. With two different haircuts (a long bob up front and a pixie in back) and two different colors (light blond coming and chocolate brown going) on the same head we have to wonder what language was being spoken when she asked for the style to begin with.
The best way we see in avoiding a mistake like this is to tear two photos out of your handy Us Weekly magazine. One of Rihanna and one of Gosselin. Inform your hairstylist that the former is your dream come true, but the latter? Well, you'd rather be granted custody of the eight kids.
If you have to, tape the reference photos to the mirror. Remember, when it comes to your hair, it's always safety first. May the fashion force be with you.
