3 Las Vegas Valley hospitals get A’s in safety scores

St. Rose Dominican Hospital, Rose de Lima campus in Henderson and MountainView and Desert Springs hospitals in Las Vegas scored an A on a report card kept by a national health care watchdog for preventing errors, injuries, accidents and infections.

The Leapfrog Group on Tuesday released its updated hospital safety score data evaluating 13 acute care hospitals in Southern Nevada. The hospitals were graded in terms of how well they prevented problems associated with surgery, how their staffs took steps to make surgery safer, how effective they were at reducing infections, whether a sufficient number of doctors and nurses were available to avoid problems, and whether proper safety procedures were in place.

Rose de Lima has earned A grades from Leapfrog twice per year since 2012. Earning B’s in Tuesday’s report were Centennial Hills, St. Rose-San Martin and Southern Hills hospitals. Leapfrog graded St. Rose-Siena, North Vista, Spring Valley, Summerlin, Sunrise and Valley hospitals a C. University Medical Center received a D.

The only changes in the grading from the fall were MountainView going from a B to an A and Southern Hills going from a C to a B. The hospitals in Boulder City and Mesquite, and the two federal facilities, the O’Callaghan Federal Hospital at Nellis Air Force Base and the VA Medical Center in North Las Vegas, were not included in Leapfrog’s review.

Nationwide, hospitals have made progress on surgical safety processes and computerized prescribing, but work remains on safety outcomes including preventing errors, accidents and infections, Leapfrog officials said.
