Add a dash of ‘Downton Abbey’ to your home decor — PHOTOS

"Downton Abbey" has been proclaimed as the top-rated PBS drama of all time. For the past five years, Southern Nevadans have been learning how British aristocracy speaks, stands, sits, eats, drinks and especially how they dress. Las Vegans can now learn how the Earl of Grantham and his family sleep as a collection of premium mattresses come to department stores just as "Downton Abbey" — in its sixth and final season — leaves the air.

"'Downton Abbey' Home by Kingsdown is one of the most exciting product launches in our company's history," said Frank Hood, Kingsdown president and CEO. "Although a fictional television series, "Downton Abbey" shares a number of qualities important to the Kingsdown brand, such as legacy, honor and high-luxury. We took inspiration from the sophisticated décor featured on the show and incorporated it into our product."

That same inspiration can be found on Bed Bath & Beyond website (badbathandbeyond.com), where customers can discover a treasure trove of "Downton Abbey" items, including shower curtains, drapes, baskets, table linens, throw pillows, tea towels, earrings, bracelets, and even a "Downton Abbey" Grantham Collection Lace Tablecloth.

Laura Ashley, an international fashion and home furnishing company that began in London in 1953, already has fabrics and wallpapers inspired by the show. They can be found at www.lauraashleyusa.com.

What's all the commotion about?

Marilyn Brown, a Downton Abbey fan who lives in Henderson, appreciates the high quality of the show and its many themes ranging from social responsibility, manners, morals and the changing of the world, especially in England following World War I.

"Anyone who has watched the show is aware of all the research and detail that goes into making 'Downton Abbey,' " she said. "They have been true to that time period, and I have enjoyed watching the characters slowly move into the modern age. Also, it's a show with strong women."

In her home, Brown's only connection to the show is a 2016 Downton Abbey calendar.

Now back to those mattresses. The collection includes 13 premium luxury sleep sets divided into three tiers. The six entry-level beds, available in support, luxury and pillow-top constructions, feature ultradurable innerspring support with specialty foam for enhanced comfort. Tailored for a masculine aesthetic, these beds feature traditional hounds tooth border fabrics that evoke an English manor lifestyle.

Three midlevel beds, also available in support, luxury and pillow-top constructions, feature the personalized support of individually wrapped coils with memory foam. Styled to suit the refined tastes of the sophisticated British aristocracy, these mattresses feature exquisite lace borders.

The four top-tier beds feature 1,791 wrapped coils for support with the comfort of natural fibers plus latex and gel-infused memory foam. Fabrics such as English lace, satin, hunter's leather and chenille with houndstooth print were incorporated into the design to appeal to men and women.

Over at Laura Ashley, Penne Cairoli, president of Laura Ashley USA, said the inspiration for the collections that reflect the "Downton Abbey" feel were inspired by the arts, but more importantly, by the architecture.

"Looking at architectural details such as plaster work, stucco and columns, the designs incorporate both the modern and the classic into the designs that make them relevant to today's customer," she explained. "The architectural influence means that texture becomes a focal point. Combining the unusual with the understated gives spaces elegance, atmosphere and depth and that is reflective of the 'Downton Abbey' time period."

Cairoli said the beautiful "Downton Abbey" sets are traditional designs that can look wonderful in any home.

"The fabrics and wallpapers can be mixed with antiques, like you see on the show, but they look just as good with modern furnishings for something unexpected," she said. "It allows you to create a room that will not look dated a year from now. For instance, it's fun to mix

"For instance, it's fun to mix the more elegant look of our damasks with toys and children's books. Like 'Downton Abbey,' Laura Ashley creates a world that is multigenerational, and it's wonderful knowing that you are buying something that can be passed to the next generation."

According to Cairoli, the company is seeing more and more people seeking out timeless designs.

"The appeal is that it draws people into a timeless era as damasks and other formal fabrics and furnishings have been around for hundreds of years," she said. "In our current world of informality, it's nice to have something formal. That's one of the strengths of 'Downton Abbey.'"
