Contractors board issues warning about Craigslist posts

The Nevada State Contractors Board is warning all Southern Nevada residents utilizing Craigslist to find contractors to perform work around their home to be aware that unlicensed contractors actively post advertisements for services claiming to be licensed.

In late September, Neil Brodsky, one of the board's Most Wanted was arrested in Los Angeles .

Brodsky, who used "Family Man" and "Licensed Plumber" in addition to other headings in his advertisements, often changes his advertisement, has been known to use different aliases and, when asked, claims to be affiliated with a named licensed company.

"The board has zero tolerance for unlicensed contractors who refuse to abide by Nevada's contracting laws," said Margi Grein, Contractors Board executive officer. "Mr. Brodsky and the others on our 'Most Wanted' list should know that we will not stop with our efforts until they are brought to justice. Nevada homeowners deserve honest, licensed contractors who value safety and quality of work above all else."

Brodsky was added to the board's Most Wanted list Feb. 9, 2010, for engaging in business or submitting bids without a license, unlawful advertising and obtaining money by false pretenses, among others. He had three active warrants for his arrest (one felony, one gross misdemeanor and one misdemeanor) with additional warrants pending. The board has several complaints from Southern Nevada consumers against Brodsky that are currently being investigated.

When looking for contractors to perform work, the board encourages consumers to follow these tips.

n Only hire licensed contractors.

n Check the contractor's license number by utilizing the online contractor search at www.nscb.nv.gov.

n Get three references and review past work.

n Get at least three bids.

n Get a written contract and do not sign anything until you completely understand the terms.

n For pool contracts, pay 10 percent down or $1,000 -- whichever is less, if a deposit is required.

n Don't let payments get ahead of the work. Keep a record of all payments.

n Don't make a final payment until you are satisfied with the job.

n Don't pay cash.

n Keep a job file of all papers relating to your project.

Additional information is available on the board's website at www.nscb.nv.gov.
