Flower arranging basics focus of January workshop

The Las Vegas Flower Arrangers will present Teaching the Basics, a two-hour, hands-on session on floral design Jan. 13.

The session, which will put an emphasis on creative line design, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the Nevada Garden Club Center, 3333 W. Washington Ave., in Lorenzi Park.

Instructor Karen Burth, a member of the club, has taught several floral design classes here and in Minnesota; she is back by popular demand.

Cost for the workshop is $15 per person; it includes flowers and a container that students will take home upon completion.

Advance registration is required. The deadline to register is Nov. 30.

Land Care wins gold award; CityCenter landscaper feted

Land Care Inc. of North Las Vegas, was awarded a 2009 Planet Overall Safety Achievement Award, Gold Performance Level, during the recently Green Industry Conference in Louisville, Ky.

The company was honored for having no vehicle accidents, no injuries or illnesses and no days away from work in Planet's safety recognition awards program, which rewards green industry professionals for their commitment to safety. A checklist was used to rate the company's complete safety program based on its combined fleet and employee incident rates.

"Safe work environments take a team effort," said Rob Diaz, president and CEO of Land Care Inc. "This safety recognition encourages our team to continue to provide a safe work environment, which not only benefits the entire team but shows our clients we hold safety as a priority as well."

Also during the conference, Planet named the recipients of its 2010 Environmental Improvement Awards. ValleyCrest Landscape Development was a grand award recipient for its work on CityCenter in the commercial landscaping contract above $1 million category.

Of the 162 projects entered in the awards program, 139 were recognized with an award. There were two decade awards, 35 grand awards, 55 merit awards, and 47 distinction awards. This was the program's 41st year.
