Giannella named finalist in kitchen design contest

Marcus Giannella, an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers and on the design team at Robb & Stucky in Las Vegas, is one of 50 nationwide regional winners in Sub-Zero and Wolf Appliance's biennial kitchen design contest.

"Since the inaugural competition in 1993, our kitchen design contest has become the most highly regarded award program in the kitchen design industry," said Paul Leuthe, corporate marketing manager for Sub-Zero and Wolf. "With each contest, we gain insight into kitchen design trends and see how top designers and architects seamlessly incorporate Sub-Zero and Wolf kitchen appliances into their remodeling and new home projects. The contest is also our way of recognizing the important role the design community plays in making Sub-Zero and Wolf a household name when it involves beautiful kitchen design."

Categories included: Best Use of Sub-Zero and Wolf in the Kitchen, Best Use of Integrated, Wine Storage, and/or Wolf Equipment Outside the Kitchen, International Awards, Student Award, and, new for this year, Sustainable "Green" Kitchen Using Sub-Zero and Wolf.

Seven distinguished industry professionals evaluated more than 1,400 entries to determine the finalists. In addition, there is a Designers' Choice Award, which is voted on by the design community via an online ballot. From now through March 25, members of the design community can visit www.subzero.com/designerschoice, to vote for what they think is the best kitchen design among the regional winners.

"This is the second year we have offered this online voting. It's a great way for designers around the world to offer their insight into what they think is great design," said Leuthe.

The contest finalists receive a $500 cash prize and a trip for two to The Breakers in Palm Beach, Fla., for a four-day celebration March 24-28, where kitchen design will be celebrated and recognized and the national, designers' choice and international winners will be announced. Contestants are competing for more than $115,000 in cash prizes.

Sub-Zero and Wolf, leaders in refrigeration, wine storage and cooking equipment, will announce their 2010-11 kitchen design contest this summer.

Conservation District, college team up for plant sale

The Conservation District of Southern Nevada has partnered with the College of Southern Nevada to bring area residents a good selection of plants for the Mojave area. They will be offered for sale during special events March 20 and April 17.

Hummingbird and butterfly attractors as well as native Mojave plants and desert tortoise food plants will be available.

All of the plants were grown locally by CSN students and are drought tolerant to promote water conservation.

Plants will be priced between $5 and $15 each. Only cash and checks will be accepted.

The sale will be held from 8 a.m. to noon both days at the Acacia Demonstration Gardens, 50 Casa Del Fuego St., Henderson.

Program offers free air conditioners to homeowners

Three area homeowners will have their old air conditioning units replaced with new units free of charge through the Nevada State Contractors Board and the Southern Nevada Air Conditioning Refrigeration Service Contractors Association's fifth annual Mission Cool Off Program.

Selections will be made depending on a person's or family's special needs.

The program is limited to the first 100 applications received now through March 31. Tenants, landlords and owners who do not reside at the residents, along with mobile home owners, may not apply.
