Free radon test kits available at awareness presentations

Area residents are invited to learn about radon and the danger it presents during free seminars throughout February.

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer for nonsmokers. Radon is a radioactive gas. It comes from the natural decay of uranium in soil and enters homes through foundation cracks, openings and some of the porous materials used to construct foundations and floors of homes .

"Winter is the ideal time to test your home for radon," said Laura Au-Yeung, the Southern Area Radon Program coordinator, "as most of us keep our homes closed up during cold weather."

Presentations are scheduled:

n Feb. 2, 2 p.m. at West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd.

n Feb. 9, 11 a.m. at Enterprise Library, 25 E. Shelbourne Ave.

n Feb. 13, 5 p.m. at Summerlin Library, 1771 Inner Circle Drive.

n Feb. 23, 11 a.m. at Centennial Hills Library, 6711 N. Buffalo Drive.

n Feb. 26, 5 p.m. at Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.
