Give your rooms a romantic makeover

Your home decor may be beautiful but missing the small touches that make a room truly inviting. A “romantic” room isn’t necessarily about flowers and lace. The key is in picking thoughtful accessories, colors, arrangements and design elements that say the people in the room mean the most. With Valentine’s Day here, now’s the perfect time to warm things up.

THE BEDROOM

When our thoughts turn to romance, bedroom is the first space that comes to mind. Instead of a floral fantasy, which doesn’t fit most contemporary definitions of warmth and intimacy, concentrate on style and color.

Color can help set moods. White is rarely the color of romance. Opt for colors and styles that are appealing and meaningful to those using the room. Whether that’s the deep aqua of the ocean you saw from your honeymoon suite, or a soothing tan that feels relaxing and romantic to both of you.

Pairing objects can create balance and offer a nod to your togetherness. Following the principles of feng shui, a bedroom occupied by two people should reflect their relationship with matching nightstands and lamps. Pairs of objects speak to the couple in the room versus two individuals.

It’s also helpful to create an atmosphere conducive to rest and romance. Exercise equipment and technology are two romance killers, whether you follow feng shui or not.

LIVING AND DINING

Living and the dining rooms are especially suited for a romantic touch. The starting point in the living room is arranging the furnishings to foster conversation and lingering together. Positioning the sofa and love seat or chairs opposite each other makes conversation easier and people-focused.

Framed family and couple photos speak to the house’s occupants and their enjoyable times together. Luxurious touches, such as upholstery and highly textured drapery fabrics can create tactile pleasure and add romance.

Lighting is critical. Adding candle or lighted wall sconces adds dimension to the room and a golden glow.

From creating private dining niches to opulent room settings with beautiful and dimmable lighting, a romantic dining room makes every meal special.

Don’t overlook the natural touch in your quest for a romantic appeal. Fresh flowers are highly romantic. Look for luxurious arrangements of orchids, or a simple vase filled with roses or tulips. A lush green plant can also be appealing.

Many silk arrangements look equally fabulous and can add a romantic touch without the upkeep.
