Hundreds turn out for Nevada Cancer Institute fundraising gala

Nevada Cancer Institute attracted 900 black-tie guests to its seventh annual fundraising gala Nov. 6 at The Mirage.

The gala began with a reception, where guests included Kris and Tim McGarry, Lovee and Bob Arum, Andrea and Richard Gordon, Karen and Tony Alamo Jr., Patricia and Richard Wright, Karen and Morgan Cashman, Ken Lowman, Jan and Owen Nitz, Joan and Jim Hammer, Tony Marnell, Tamara and Jay Kornmayer, Kathy and Randy Black, Chantal and Stephen Cloobeck, Mari and Thom Landers, Shannon McBeath, Kelly Haddrill, Mel Wolzinger, Susan Fine, Frank Schreck, Tim Herbst, Ann Lynch, Sheldon Schore, Larry Ruvo, Jay Barrett and State Sen. John Lee, D-North Las Vegas. Celebrity chefs Chi Choi and Gene Kato prepared delicacies.

A gourmet dinner created by Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group followed for D. Taylor and Bobette Bond, John Bailey, Stacy and David Marino, Judy Wangler, Michelle Webster, Pat Sullivan, Nancy Rodriguez, Richard Rizo, Lilimae Santos and Marty Teller, and Mike Yackira.

CNN's Larry King emceed the event, introducing Heather and Jim Murren, founders of Nevada Cancer Institute, and auctioneer Pete Stremmel, who conducted a live auction.

The event concluded with a private screening of the new James Bond adventure "Quantum of Solace" for Theresa and Michael Minden, Bryan O'Reilly, Meghan and Andy North, LeeAnn and Jessie Hunt, and Sandy Wolf.

DESERT NOCTURNE: The Las Vegas Philharmonic Guild hosted Desert Nocturne, chaired by Toni Carpenter and Monica Fuller, on Nov. 9 to raise funds for the orchestra's 10th anniversary season.

Green Valley Ranch was the venue for an evening beginning with a cocktail reception and silent auction with musical accompaniment by Nevada School of the Arts harpists, Julie and Yvonne Cox.

Among the guests were Maestro David Itkin and wife Teri, Barbara and Bruce Woollen, Juliana and Matthew McRae, Phyllis and Hugh Roberts, Betsy and Hal Weller, Nancy and John Shepherd, Jacki Baskow, Diane Carlson and Bill Freyd, Barbara Senninger, Terri and Tom Eden, Wendy and Richard Plaster, David Mulkey, Libby Bjerke, Karen Barrett and Jerry Faccinani, Cristine Lefkowitz, Marge and Wallace Butler, Kay and Allen Browne, and Thalia Dondero.

Masters of ceremonies were Phil Kohen and Rick Perez of the Sports Zoo, KLAV-AM 1230.

State proclamations honoring the philharmonic's anniversary were presented by Gayle Anderson, chief of protocol for the state of Nevada.

The highlight of the evening was dancing to the music of the 17-piece Walt Boenig Big Band with vocals by Laura Taylor Mulkey.

Other guests were Margie Conway, Phyllis Haley, Jim Stallings, Shannon and Shea Gordon, Sandra and James Frank, and Persia and James Golden.
