Officer invited to wedding of woman he saved 20 years ago

YONKERS, N.Y. — A Yonkers police captain will be a guest at the wedding of a baby whose life he saved more than 20 years ago.

The Journal News reports that Capt. Joseph Barca will attend the Aug. 17 wedding of Shammarah Hamideh outside Chicago.

It was Dec. 28, 1993 when Barca responded to a call about a baby not breathing.

Barca took the 2-month-old from her distraught father and performed resuscitation. He hit her back until the obstruction flew out. By the time the baby got to the hospital she was breathing on her own.

Hamideh is a nursing school graduate now. She plans to marry truck driver Mohammed Salah.

She says Barca sends her a birthday card every year and treats her like his own daughter.
