Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, join a moderate four-mile hike to Lower Telephone Canyon. Sept. 28 events will include a moderate four-mile hike to the North Peak via Rocky Gap Summit and Limestone North over to Sandstone North Peak overlooking Ice Box Canyon and Bridge Mountain; a one-mile hike for ages 6-16 for sights and sounds of the desert; a moderate two-three mile scramble up into the Calico Hills Trail; and a moderate five-mile hike to Bristlecone Trail and Bonanza Trail junction (515-5367).

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people over 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three- to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday at Mount Charleston. They meet at the third floor (left side) of the east parking garage of Santa Fe Station, 4949 N. Rancho Drive, for an 8:30 a.m. departure (228-0773).

Las Vegas Valley Bicycle Club: Tuesday at 6:15 a.m. Meet at Einstein's Bagels, 9031 W. Sahara Ave., for an easy-paced ride to Red Rock (e-mail dgcasey@cox.net or call 379-3737). A 6:15 a.m. moderate to fast 15- to 20-mile road ride on Wednesday. Meet at the NuVision Cyclery on West Lake Mead Boulevard, between Rampart Boulevard and Scholar Lane (228-1333). There will be a 30-plus-mile, moderate and hilly ride Wednesday and Thursday at 7 a.m., and a 30- to 50-plus -mile grade ride on Saturday at 7 a.m. Meet behind Starbucks on West Charleston Boulevard and Town Center Drive. Friday at 6:15 a.m., meet at Einstein's Bagels, 9031 W. Sahara Ave., for an easy-paced ride to Red Rock (e-mail dgcasey@cox.net or call 379-3737). Bring plenty of water for all rides.

Red Rock Canyon: A low-key, six-mile beginner ride for ages 10 and over will take place on Sept. 28. Helmets are required (515-5367).

Desert Honda Riders of Las Vegas will host its annual Ride for Kids Event to benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. Volunteer ride guides are welcome. Information is available at www.carterpowersports.com under the RFK link, or contact paul@carterpowersports.com.

The Las Vegas Valley Bicycle Club will participate in the Metric Century Bicycle Poker Ride on Oct. 12, as part of Perini Green Weekend, the construction industry's charity fundraiser. Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center: "Tort Talks," a program about Nevada's state reptile, the desert tortoise, will be featured Tuesday, ongoing from 9 to 11 a.m. Also on Tuesday, "Euro-cultural Impacts of Red Rock Canyon," a program on the historical impacts of the European culture on Red Rock Canyon, will take place, ongoing from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday's events will include a fun and interactive program for ages 5-11 about the history of the Paiutes in Red Rock Canyon; also take a close look at the flora, fauna or geology of Red Rock and the surrounding Mojave Desert, ongoing from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. (515-5367).
