HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Wednesday, an easy, 21/2-mile early hike along the Moenkopi Trail will take place. Saturday's events will include a 1/2 mile easy walk at Corn Creek to observe aquatic and land plants and animals. At 7 p.m. June 15, a twilight hike will take place along the old railroad supply route as it winds its way toward Boulder City. This portion of the trail is paved and has been incorporated into the River Mountain Loop Trail (515-5367).

Nevada State Parks: Beaver Dam State Park will host a ranger-led nature hike Saturday. The 4.2-mile round trip hike runs along Beaver Dam Wash (775-784-4460).

Sierra Club: The Sierra Club will have a six-mile moderate to strenuous hike to the South Sister Peak trail head in Mack's Canyon in the Spring Mountain Range, with an elevation gain of 1,500 feet (808-3855 onecoolhike@yahoo.com).

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people over 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three- to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday at Red Rock. They meet at the Best Buy parking lot at West Charleston Boulevard and the Las Vegas Beltway in Summerlin for an 8:30 a.m. departure. Contact Diane at 228-0773.

Las Vegas Valley Bicycle Club: Tuesday at 6:15 a.m. Meet at Einstein's Bagels, 9031 W. Sahara Ave., for an easy-paced ride to Red Rock (e-mail: dgcasey@cox.net or call 379-3737). A 6:15 a.m. moderate to fast 15- to 20-mile road ride on Wednesday. Meet at the NuVision Cyclery on West Lake Mead Boulevard., between Rampart Boulevard and Scholar Lane (call Danny or Mike at 228-1333). There will be a 30-plus-mile, moderate and hilly ride Wednesday and Thursday at 7 a.m., and a 30- to 50-plus -mile grade ride on Saturday at 7 a.m. Meet behind Starbucks on West Charleston Boulevard and Town Center Drive. Friday at 6:15 a.m., meet at Einstein's Bagels, 9031 W. Sahara Ave., for an easy-paced ride to Red Rock (e-mail dgcasey@cox.net or call 379-3737). Bring plenty of water for all rides.

Red Rock Canyon: No experience is necessary for this six-mile introductory mountain bike ride on June 15, starting from the Late Night parking lot. Helmets are required. Ages 10 and over (515-5367).

Desert Honda Riders: The Desert Honda Riders of Las Vegas will have a ride to Zion with an optional overnight on Saturday, approximately 500 miles. For more information go todeserthondariderslasvegasnv@ yahoogroups.com.

The Desert Riders Club of Nevada: The Las Vegas Desert Riders Club of Nevada, a local chapter of the Honda Rider's Club of America, meets at 9 a.m. the second Saturday of the month at Carter Power Sports, 6725 S. Decatur Blvd. All motorcycles are welcome (795-2000).

Lake Mead National Recreation Area: "Before the Waters Rose," a program focusing on life in St. Thomas in the days before fish swam the streets, will be presented at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd. (293-8990).

Sierra Club: The Sierra Club will have its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Wengert Room at Nevada Power Company, 6226 W. Sahara Road. Deepika Padam, archiect with Tate Snyder Kimsey architectural firm, will speak about The U.S. Green Building Council and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (732-7750).

Red Rock Canyon: "Wild Horses and Burros -- Living Legends of the West," will be presented from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Visitor Center. Learn how to help protect them. Also on Saturday, bring your 2- to 5-year-olds for a program about some of Red Rock's amazing plant life. Kids can see animals up close, enjoy a short hike and play interactive learning games (515-5367).

Archaeo-Nevada Society along with the Bureau of Land Management invites volunteers to help with Red Rock Conservation projects. Visit www.archaeoevada.org.
