Outdoor activities around Southern Nevada

HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, join a naturalist and a geologist to discuss the geological features, plants and animals encountered on a moderately strenuous, three-mile hike along the Pine Creek Trail; for ages 10 and older. On Wednesday, bring a snack and a sketchbook for a moderate, 3.3-mile hike along the Pine Creek Trail that will include a break to draw pictures; for ages 10 and older. On Feb. 3, visit two or three springs on an easy, three-mile hike; for ages 10 and older.

Desert National Wildlife Refuge: On Saturday, enjoy an easy, half-mile walk at Corn Creek Spring.

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people 50 and older who are involved in hiking and related social activities plans several hikes each week of various difficulty levels, including an easy-to-moderate social hike on Saturdays. OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: On Tuesday, view some of the arachnids, reptiles, birds and mammals found at Red Rock in a tabletop exhibit from 11 a.m. to noon at the visitor center. On Saturday, meet Mascot Max and learn about Nevada's state reptile, the desert tortoise, from 10 a.m. to noon at the visitor center.

Archaeo-Nevada Society, along with the Bureau of Land Management, seeks volunteers to help with Red Rock Canyon conservation projects. Visit www.archaeonevada.org.
