Design events converge in Las Vegas beginning today

Las Vegas will be the center of the design world for the next two weeks with a number of events that feature the latest in interior decorating, home furnishings, and kitchen and bath products.

There is value in using an interior designer

The American Society of Interior Designers is the oldest and largest professional organization of its kind. As president of the Central California/Nevada Chapter, I naturally have a vested interest in promoting the benefits derived from working with an ASID designer. Along with the many duties of my office, it’s also my own personal goal to educate the public as much as possible about why using a professional designer makes such good, practical economic and aesthetic sense.

Although it’s warm now, cold weather still possible next month

Shredded wood works best as mulch for roses

Master Gardener Helen Brown presents All About Tomatoes at 9 a.m. Saturday at the UNCE orchard in North Las Vegas. Registration for Master Gardener morning classes beginning in March is now underway. For more information on both of these events, call the Master Gardener hotline at 702-257-5555.

Do you have any advice for me so that this year I follow through with my 2014 resolution to finish my house? — Doris.

Working with concrete is hard, dirty job

Q: I want to install a concrete patio in my back yard where the builder put a small pad. I’ve never worked with concrete, but my friends are willing to help. The patio would measure 10 feet by 14 feet. Is this a project I could handle?

2014 décor trends

With a new year comes new trends in home design and decorating. Among them: paler walls contrasted with colorful furniture and plenty of personal expression, design experts say.
