RELIGION NOTES

ANNOUNCEMENT

Christ Church Episcopal, 2000 S. Maryland Parkway, recently welcomed its new rector, the Rev. J. Barry Vaughn. Vaughn comes from St. Alban’s Parish in Birmingham, Ala. A native of Alabama, Vaughn was confirmed after graduating from Harvard University. He received a Master of Divinity from Yale and a doctorate from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. An accomplished pianist, Vaughn has performed as a soloist and accompanist, and recently completed his first book, “Bishops, Bourbons, and Big Mules: A History of the Episcopal Church in Alabama,” to be published in October. He began his ministry at Christ Church Episcopal on March 1.

MUSIC

The Myron Heaton Chorale will present a new edition and completion of Mozart’s Grand Mass in C Minor at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Lakes Lutheran Church, 8200 W. Sahara Ave. Tickets are $10 at the door. It’s a benefit for Lutheran Social Services of Nevada (363-2515).

Desert Spring United Methodist Church, 120 N. Pavilion Center Drive, will present a piano recital featuring Ruth Johnson at 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free (256-5933).

The Celebrity City Chorus will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Community Lutheran Church, 3720 E. Tropicana Ave. (223-7893).

The Southern Nevada chapter of the American Guild of Organists will present a concert featuring James Kibbie at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Christ Church Episcopal, 2000 S. Maryland Parkway. On March 16, Kibbie will present a workshop on French composer Jehan Alain at 10 a.m. Both events are free (898-5455).

Mountain View Presbyterian Church, 8601 Del Webb Blvd., will host a concert featuring flutist Alexander Viazovtsev at 3 p.m. March 17. Admission is free, but freewill donations will be accepted (341-7800).

The Mama Doni Band will perform at 11 a.m. March 24 at Temple Beth Sholom, 10700 Havenwood Lane. Passover-themed stories and crafts will follow the concert. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $8 for children (794-0090).

Nevada Desert Experience will have its annual Sacred Peace Walk from March 23 to 29. The 65-mile pilgrimage to the Nevada National Security Site will begin with an orientation at 2 p.m. March 23 at 1420 W. Bartlett Ave. The walk will begin March 24 and end March 29. SERVICES

The women of Zion United Methodist Church will celebrate their annual Women’s Day during the 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. services on Sunday at 2108 N. Revere St., North Las Vegas (648-7806).

First Henderson United Methodist Church, 609 E. Horizon Drive, Henderson, will offer a Diminishing Lights Lenten Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Wednesday (568-6409).

EVENTS

The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary will host a vendor expo, featuring a variety of products and services, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at The Salvation Army Citadel Fellowship Hall, 2900 Palomino Lane. The fundraiser will help support the organization’s 19 programs in Southern Nevada. Admission is free (870-4430).

Redrock Baptist Church, 5500 Alta Drive, will host the “Love Mission Rummage Sale” fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today. Raffle tickets will be available. Proceeds will provide funds for the church’s missionaries to go to Africa to teach in September (870-9198).

Desert Spring Theatre Arts will present the musical “Bye, Bye Birdie” at 7 p.m. Friday, and 3 and 7 p.m. today and March 16 at Desert Spring United Methodist Church, 120 N. Pavilion Center Drive. Tickets are $7.50 (290-1173).

The Ramakrishna-Vedanta Center, 10732 Balsam Creek Road, will have Arati and a lecture by Swami Atmavidyananda, of the Ramakrishna Order of India, on Shiva and Ramakrishna beginning at 5 p.m. Tuesday. A potluck will follow. On Thursday, there will be Arati and Gita Circle, followed by prasad, at 6:30 p.m. (646-4889).

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas Day of Recollection will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 16 in La Voy Hall at St. Francis De Sales Parish, 1111 Michael Way. The event will feature the Rev. First Presbyterian Church of Las Vegas, 1515 W. Charleston Blvd., will have its Presbyterian Women’s annual rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to noon March 16 (384-4554).

St. Joseph Husband of Mary Catholic Church, 7260 W. Sahara Ave., will host its 21st annual St. Joseph Table in the community center at 9 a.m. March 17. The table will feature baked goods with proceeds going to feed the poor, hungry and homeless. A Lenten pasta will be served from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The cost is $7 for adults, ages 6 and younger eat free (838-9879).

MEETINGS

CLASSES

The Las Vegas Diamond Way Buddhist Group offers guided meditation and dharma talks at 7:45 p.m. Thursdays (260-4426).
