TEACHERS CAN APPLY FOR $500 LITERACY GRANTS FOR CLASSROOMS

City National Bank's Reading Is the Way Up program is giving away $100,000 in literacy grants to local educators. Teachers, librarians, administrators and other school employees may submit a grant request for up to $500. The grants are to help students in kindergarten through 12th grade by offering creative literacy projects.

Applications are due Nov. 30 and confirmation by an authorized school official must accompany each application. To apply, visit readingisthewayup.org.

LAS VEGAS ACADEMY SCHEDULES PERFORMING ARTS COLLEGE FAIR

Las Vegas Academy, 315 S. Seventh St., is scheduled to host the Las Vegas Performing and Visual Arts College Fair from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday . The event is free and open to the public.

The National Association for College Admission Counseling is sponsoring the event to allow college-bound students to meet with admission representatives from colleges, universities, studios, festivals and other educational institutions with visual and performing arts programs. Students will learn about admission and financial aid, portfolio days, auditions, student life and more.

HISTORIC BLACK COLLEGE UNIVERSITY TOUR MEETING PLANNED

A registration meeting sponsored by 32nd Street Theater for the 18th annual Historic Black College University Tour is scheduled at 10 a.m. Saturday at Nehemiah Ministries, 3606 N. Rancho Drive, Suite 144.

The meeting will discuss the tour, which plans to visit North Carolina and the campuses of North Carolina A&T State University, Johnson C. Smith University, St. Augustine's University, Shaw University, North Carolina Central University, Fayetteville State University and Winston-Salem State University during the Clark County School District's spring break March 24-29.

VALLEY AUTOMALL SEEKS STUDENTS FOR ANNUAL TREE-DECORATING CONTEST

The Valley Automall is accepting entries on a first-come, first-served basis for its 15th annual tree-decorating contest, scheduled for Nov. 30.

The contest is open to student groups from all Clark County high schools. Students will decorate 20 dealer showrooms to compete for cash prizes of $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000. Teams will be provided a small budget to decorate a 10-foot-tall tree. Only one team per school will be accepted.

FYFE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RECEIVES DONATION FROM LOCAL NONPROFIT

Fyfe Elementary School, 4101 W. Bonanza Road, received more than $28,000 from the Charles Marshall Foundation to purchase textbooks and school supplies. The school held an appreciation ceremony Oct. 16.

The Charles Marshall Foundation, 7322 S. Rainbow Blvd., Suite 102, is a nonprofit organization that supports local schools and medical research.

MCCAW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RECEIVES $2,500 FROM WINDER FARMS

McCaw Elementary School, 330 Tin St., was selected to receive a $2,500 cash donation from Winder Farms.

As part of the second annual Delivering Magic book drive and contest ---- sponsored by The Public Education Foundation, magician Mac King and other supporters ---- grand prize winner Charity Kerr received free groceries for a year and the opportunity to donate $2,500 to the school of her choice.

The book drive collected more than 2,000 new and gently used books for local elementary schoolchildren. Those who donated were entered to win free groceries. Since the book drive started last school year, more than 6,500 books have been collected.

BARTLETT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SEEKS YEARBOOK HELPERS

Bartlett Elementary School, 1961 Wigwam Parkway, seeks adult volunteers for its Bartlett Yearbook Committee to assist with the production of its annual yearbook. People with skills creating online scrapbooks are encouraged to help.

PASEO VERDE LIBRARY OFFERS HOMEWORK HELP AFTER SCHOOL

ARBOR VIEW HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL TEAM HOSTING FUNDRAISERS

Arbor View High School, 7500 Whispering Sands Drive, has three fundraisers scheduled in November and December to help support its 2013 baseball program.

At 7 a.m. Nov. 3, a community rummage sale is scheduled in the school parking lot. Parking spaces will be available to rent to display and sell items, with renters keeping all proceeds. Two parking spaces are $25. To reserve a spot, call 702-809-6489.

At 6 p.m. Nov. 16, a spaghetti dinner is scheduled in the school's cafeteria. Tickets are $10 per person, and kids 3 or younger eat free. Dinner includes a spaghetti entree, salad, bread and a drink. Various desserts will be sold for 50 cents.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 1, the school plans to host its fourth annual holiday baseball camp on the baseball field. Registration is set for 8 a.m. The camp is open to kids 8 to 14 and is $50 per player. Players are asked to bring water and lunch. High school coaches and players will teach the camp.

SMITH MIDDLE SCHOOL TO HOST MUSIC IN THE PARK

Smith Middle School, 1301 E. Tonopah Ave., plans to host its second annual Music in the Park event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 3.

The event is set to feature food, family activities and music from local artists and high school groups.

CUNNINGHAM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 'ADOPTED' BY UNLV

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas "adopted" Cunningham Elementary School, 4145 Jimmy Durante Blvd., this school year as part of an initiative to help the at-risk school.

UNLV cheerleaders, athletes and other students will host a pep rally at Cunningham Nov. 1 and donate books to the school's library that will be collected during UNLV's homecoming week. Top students at Cunningham also will receive free tickets to UNLV's Nov. 3 homecoming football game against New Mexico.

UNLV's Adopt-A-School program started in 2009 and encourages elementary schoolchildren to excel academically. UNLV's four other adopted elementary schools are Gragson, 555 N. Honolulu St.; Petersen, 3650 Cambridge St.; Paradise, 900 Cottage Grove Ave.; and Fyfe, 4101 W. Bonanza Road.

SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEE TO HOST MEET-AND-GREET WITH PARENTS

District D School Board Trustee Lorraine Alderman's next Making Connections event is scheduled for 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday at La Bonita Supermarkets, 2500 E. Desert Inn Road.

The event will allow parents to meet with Alderman without an appointment to share comments, suggestions and concerns. Spanish translation will be available.
