NONPROFIT GROUP RAISES $16,000 FOR HOMELESS STUDENTS

Project 150, a local nonprofit organization that helps homeless students at 15 local high schools, raised more that $16,000 during its one-year anniversary fundraiser at Dom DeMarco's Pizzeria, 9785 W. Charleston Blvd. All funds will be used for food, clothing and supplies for the students.

SUMMERLIN CHURCH TO HOST LITERACY PROGRAM WITH PETS

Desert Spring United Methodist Church, 120 N. Pavilion Center Drive, plans to offer a monthly literacy program, Reading With Rascal, beginning Jan. 12 from 10 a.m. to noon and continuing every second Saturday of subsequent months. Members of the church will bring their dogs for children to play with and help them with reading.

RANCHO HIGH SCHOOL TO HOST MATH AND SCIENCE CONFERENCE

Rancho High School, 1900 E. Searles Ave., is scheduled to host the 2013 Southern Nevada Math and Science Conference Jan. 18 and 19. The conference will offer informational sessions and activities for teachers.

CALIFORNIA-BASED FOUNDATION GIVES MEALS TO LOCAL STUDENTS

The Mizel Family Foundation, based in California, donated more than 4,000 dinner boxes to needy families in the Clark County School District. All students who received the boxes at school are members of After-School All-Stars Las Vegas, which supports underprivileged youths at 15 local elementary and middle schools. The boxes included turkeys, stuffing, potatoes, vegetables, pies and more.

The foundation has given meals to nearly 19,000 families during the holidays since 2007.

DISCOUNTED STUDENT TICKETS AVAILABLE TO DA VINCI EXHIBIT

"Da Vinci - The Genius," the Leonardo da Vinci exhibition at The Venetian, 3355 Las Vegas Blvd. South, is offering free admission to students 12 or younger with a paid adult through Jan. 27. The exhibition is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and tickets are $20 for Nevada residents. Admission for students 13 or older with a valid school ID is $17.

The exhibit is organized by Imagine Exhibitions and features 13 themed areas showcasing more than 200 pieces of artwork and inventions.

LOCAL NONPROFIT HOSTS SUPPLIES DRIVE FOR HOMELESS STUDENTS

Project 150, a local nonprofit organization that helps homeless students, is hosting a fundraiser and supplies drive through December to provide food, clothing and shelter for students in time for the holidays. The organization was founded a year ago and has served nearly 1,000 homeless teens at 15 local high schools.

UNIVERSITY PLANS GARDENING WORKSHOP FOCUSING ON PRUNING TECHNIQUES

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension plans a workshop on gardening in small places from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 12 at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road.

The session will cover desert pruning techniques. Preregistration is required. There is a $25 fee, which includes class materials.
