PALO VERDE HONORS FORMER TEACHER KILLED IN 9/11 ATTACKS

Palo Verde High School, 333 S. Pavilion Center Drive, held its annual Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony in honor of the victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks, including former Palo Verde language teacher Barbara Edwards, who was a passenger of American Airlines Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon.

Air Force Junior ROTC and choir students performed in the ceremony. Clark County School District Superintendent Dwight Jones also attended.

SCHOOL DISTRICT FAMILIES CAN RECEIVE DISCOUNTED INTERNET SERVICE

CenturyLink Inc. has partnered with the Clark County School District to provide discounted broadband Internet to low-income students and their families.

Eligible families can receive basic high-speed Internet service starting at $9.95 per month for the first year, plus taxes and fees. Additional fees will be incurred after one year. Higher bandwidth services also are available at discounted rates.

BASIC HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1982 PLANNING 30-YEAR REUNION IN OCTOBER

The Basic High School class of 1982 plans to host its 30-year reunion Oct. 5-7. Events scheduled include a tailgate party Oct. 5 before Basic's homecoming football game; a dinner party Oct. 6; and a picnic Oct. 7 at the Lake Mead picnic area. A motorcycle ride and round of golf also are being planned for those interested.

VEGAS PBS TO HOST FUNDRAISER FOR STUDENT HEALTH PROGRAM

Vegas PBS plans to host its third annual 5K run and one-mile walk to support the Keeping Kids Fit program, which educates students on healthy eating and exercise habits, at 8 a.m. Oct. 6 at Vegas PBS, 3050 E. Flamingo Road.

Registration is set to begin at 6:30 a.m. and is $40 on the day of the race. Early registration is available for $25 by Friday and $35 by Oct. 4 at vegaspbs.org/kkf5k.

UNLV DENTAL STUDENTS GIVE KIDS FREE TEETH SCREENINGS

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine were scheduled to provide free oral health screenings, cleanings and other services to nearly 100 children Sept. 15 at the UNLV School of Dental Medicine, 1700 W. Charleston Blvd.

The event helped kids 5 to 15 who were selected by the Clark County School District based on need. About 40 dental students performed the preventative services and conducted oral hygiene workshops for families. The dental school hosts several free clinics throughout the year.

UNLV LIBRARIES TO HOST SOCIAL MEDIA WORKSHOP FOR ENTREPRENEURS

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries' Business by the Book Workshop Series is scheduled to continue from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 10 with Social Media Socialized at UNLV's Lied Library, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway.

The free workshop "will familiarize business owners with tools necessary to use social media to their advantage," according to UNLV Libraries.

The workshop series teaches business owners and entrepreneurs what online resources are available at UNLV Libraries.

DOWNTOWN-AREA ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS RECEIVE SUPPLIES FROM CITY COUNCIL

Las Vegas Ward 3 Councilman Bob Coffin and his staff members delivered school supplies to 13 downtown-area elementary schools Sept. 13.

Each school received a pallet loaded with pencils, crayons, spiral notebooks, folders, notebook paper, glue sticks, tissues, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes and bookmarks. Funding for supplies came from Las Vegas' Ward 3 budget, but the cost was not provided by the city's public information office.

HIKE PLANNED FRIDAY FOR HOME-SCHOOLERS

The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department plans to host a series of educational hikes for home-schooled students this fall. The hikes are open to children 5 to 10 accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The first in the series will cover trail bicycling and hiking etiquette and is scheduled from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Equestrian Park South, 1200 Equestrian Drive. Participants are asked to bring a bike or a scooter and a helmet.

Other hikes are scheduled for Oct. 18 and Nov. 8.

CANYON SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL TO HOST COLLEGE READINESS WORKSHOP

Canyon Springs High School, 350 E. Alexander Road, plans to host a fall college readiness educational workshop for 10th-, 11th- and 12th-graders and their parents from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today.

Presentations regarding scholarships, financial aid and additional college readiness information will be offered.

CRAIG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS RECEIVE NEW BOOKS

Students at Craig Elementary School, 2637 E. Gowan Road, received new books Sept. 12 from the We Give Books ReadMobile Tour, sponsored by the Pearson Foundation. The We Give Books campaign will donate books to students at 50 schools across the country by Oct. 4.

LAS VEGAS ACADEMY TO HOST PERFORMING ARTS COLLEGE FAIR

Las Vegas Academy, 315 S. Seventh St., is scheduled to host the Las Vegas Performing and Visual Arts College Fair from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 24. The event is free and open to the public.

The National Association for College Admission Counseling is sponsoring the event to allow college-bound students to meet with admission representatives from colleges, universities, studios, festivals and other educational institutions with visual and performing arts programs. Students will learn about admission and financial aid, portfolio days, auditions, student life and more.

MGM ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR TEACHER RECOGNITION PROGRAM

MGM Resorts International is accepting nominations for its Teacher of the Game Recognition Program. All licensed Clark County School District teachers are eligible to be nominated, and 17 will be selected to attend a University of Nevada, Las Vegas Runnin' Rebels men's basketball home game this season. Other prizes will also be awarded, including $500 each for their classrooms.

Teachers nominated should demonstrate excellence in the classroom, motivation, creativity and dedication. Nominations are due Monday.

SPARK! POETRY CONTEST OPEN TO HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

Clark County high school students are invited to enter the Spark! poetry contest sponsored by the Vegas Valley Book Festival. Guidelines are available at vegasvalleybookfestival.org or at the Nevada Arts Council office at 2755 E. Desert Inn Road, Suite 155. The deadline for submission is at 5 p.m. Oct. 5.

Winners will receive cash prizes of $100, $200 and $300. Students will be judged on their original poems and their recitation at the festival on Nov. 3.
