College of Southern Nevada offering Free U.S. naturalization prep courses

The College of Southern Nevada's Division of Workforce and Economic Development will offer a free course for those preparing for the U.S. naturalization exam, with an orientation class scheduled for Thursday at CSN's Sahara West Center, 2409 Las Verdes St. The time of the orientation will be made available after registration.

The orientation class will confirm eligibility, explain the process of naturalization and describe the courses. The courses typically run for about 15 weeks, depending on the volume of participants.

Prospective students must register for the orientation session at csn.edu/workforce.

FOR FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS

Program of Academic Exchange, or PAX, is looking for host families for foreign exchange students for the
2011-12 school year. Families may choose to host a student for one semester or a school year.

The Center for Cultural Interchange is looking for host families for foreign exchange students for the 2011-12 school year. All exchange students are 15 to 18 years old and are proficient in English. The CCI hopes to place more than 1,000 students from more than 50 countries.

design Scholarship available
for architecture students

Three V Enterprises is accepting applications for the Student AquaTekture Design Competition and Scholarship. The scholarship is open to students enrolled in a college, university or vocational school. The deadline for submissions is Sept. 1.

Three V Enterprises hosts the annual Global AquaTekture Visionary Awards that recognizes individuals and companies that use water creatively as a main architectural feature.

The scholarship "will be awarded to the student who demonstrates a promising future in integrative design or architecture and has a genuine interest in architecture, interior design, engineering, landscape design, (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), product or (Computer-aided Design) relating to AquaTekture."

The winner will receive a monetary scholarship and other prizes, and the design will be showcased at the Global AquaTekture Visionary Awards. The monetary value of the scholarship was not available. For an application and guidelines, visit gavaawards.com.

spread the word nevada hosting annual fundraising gala

Spread the Word Nevada is scheduled to host its 10th Anniversary Storybook Gala at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at The Venetian, 3355 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

The Storybook Gala, "One Enchanted Evening," is the foundation's largest annual fundraising event. The event will feature silent and live auctions, prize drawings, entertainment and dinner.

Spread the Word Nevada is a nonprofit group that donates books to disadvantaged children to help them create home libraries. Since 2001, nearly 200,000 local students have received more than 1.7 million books. Individual seats are $250, and various sponsorship levels are available.

School district seeking
scholarship funds for students

The Clark County School District is seeking local donors to help more students pay for college next year. Any businesses or individuals interested in providing scholarship funds for students are asked to call Kim Boyle of CCSD's Curriculum and Professional Development office at 799-8441 or Kelly Grimm of the Public Education Foundation at 221-7421.

Local graduates received nearly $150 million in scholarship offers this year, not including the Millennium Scholarship fund.

online school Nevada Virtual Academy enrolling for fall

Nevada Virtual Academy, an online public charter school, is enrolling students for the 2011-12 school year.

NVVA offers curriculum for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. English, math, science, history, music and art courses are at the elementary and middle school levels. The high school program offers more than 200 core, elective and Advanced Placement courses, including foreign language.

Downtown Charter School Named Most Improved

The 100 Academy of Excellence, 2341 Comstock Drive, was named the most improved school of its family of 75 charter schools nationwide.

Operating under Imagine Schools, the 100 Academy's students achieved gains of more than one school year in standardized math and reading tests.
