Local high school students compete in Science Bowl — VIDEO
Students from Las Vegas’ Northwest Career and Technical Academy over the weekend were in the running for the U.S Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl championship in Washington, D.C.
The local high school students, who earned their spot in the competition by winning regional competitions earlier in the year, did not advance to the final rounds but were among the top 68 schools in the country, the energy department said.
The Science Bowl is “one of the most prestigious science academic competitions in the country,” the local students had to win a regional competition held earlier in the year, the energy department said.
About 14,000 students competed in the fast-paced question-and-answers format with subjects in the math and science discipline.
The competition was comprised of four divisions with eight teams and four divisions with nine, department spokesman Ethan Alpern said.
The Vegas team finished in the top four of their division — the top two teams advanced — and finished in the top two in the experiment portion of the competition, which serves as a tie-breaker.
The Science Bowl was established in 1991 and about 240,000 students have participated, the energy department said.
