MAYOR SET TO HOLD COMMUNITY MEETING

North Las Vegas Mayor Shari Buck has scheduled a community "plática," or conversation with residents, at 6 p.m. Thursday at J.D. Smith Middle School, 1301 E. Tonopah Ave.

This free event is open to all ages. With a focus on the Latino community, the event is to provide an opportunity for residents to meet the mayor and learn about resources available to them throughout the community and is to include information booths on health, city services and public safety. Special presentations are set to cover how to avoid scams and fraud, and domestic violence victim advocacy and resources.

PRE-PRIMARY FORUM PLANNED

A public forum to listen to candidates running for local office is planned for 6 p.m. May 22 at the Aliante Library, 2400 Deer Springs Road.

The candidates for all state, county and judicial seats in the North Las Vegas jurisdiction are slated to make a presentation and field questions.

Early voting for the primary is planned for May 26.

FREE MORTGAGE SYMPOSIUMS PLANNED

The third of nine free symposiums planned to help homeowners with short sales, foreclosure or mortgage insecurity is planned for 6:30 p.m. May 22 at the Aliante Library, 2400 W. Deer Springs Way. Real estate experts, loan adjusters, attorneys and credit professionals are slated to attend.

EASTER SEALS OFFERING FREE DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENINGS

Easter Seals Nevada is partnering with CVS Pharmacy to offer free developmental screenings from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 23 for parents and caregivers of young children in select CVS locations.

This 20-minute screening tool is free online through support from the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust in collaboration with Easter Seals Nevada's Make the First Five Count initiative for the early detection and treatment of developmental delays in children birth to 5 years old.

On average, four out of five children in Nevada are not properly screened for developmental delays. With the help of this tool, parents and caregivers can track their children's development through age 5 and make sure they are hitting necessary milestones.

An Easter Seals Nevada developmental specialist will be on-site to assist with screenings.

NV Energy and Southwest Gas plan to host a free workshop on the benefits of solar water heating from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Student Union Room 208 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway.

Utility customers can meet with company representatives about the incentive programs for this energy-efficient technology.

GOVERNMENT AUCTION PLANNED

An auction featuring items from several government agencies is scheduled at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Clark County storage lot at 4320 Stephanie St. off East Flamingo Road near Dog Fancier's Park.

HEALTH COMPANY HONORED

NEW PARK RECOGNIZED BY STATE SOCIETY

Tropical Breeze Park, at Tropical Parkway and Bruce Street, was awarded the 2012 Elmer H. Anderson Park Excellence Award, a recognition of excellence in park planning and design by the Nevada Recreation and Park Society. The park is the city of North Las Vegas's newest attraction. It is a 20-acre location with three lighted soccer fields, an all-ages playground, a water play area, group picnic grounds and walking trails.

SOUTHERN NEVADA HEALTH DISTRICT CLOSES MAIN FACILITY

The Southern Nevada Health District has suspended operations at its main facility at 625 Shadow Lane as a result of an engineering report that found that the main building lacks an internal support system and may be unsafe to occupy. This closure impacts only services in the main building.

Services provided in the outlying buildings on the campus are not affected at this time, and services will continue to be available at public health centers in East Las Vegas, Henderson, the Cambridge Community Outreach Center and at service sites throughout the valley. Updated information on service availability also is available at southernnevadahealthdistrict.org or by calling 759-4636 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Client services that are available at other locations include:

Birth and death records at the East Las Vegas Public Health Center and the Henderson Public Health Center

Health cards at the East Las Vegas Public Health Center and the Cambridge Community Outreach Center

HIV/AIDS testing at the East Las Vegas Public Health Center and the Henderson Public Health Center

Immunization clinic at the East Las Vegas Public Health Center and the Henderson Public Health Center

Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic at the East Las Vegas Public Health Center and the Henderson Public Health Center

Services that have been temporarily suspended include: Food and pool plan review, individual sewage disposal system plan review; loan certifications for private water supplies and sewage disposal systems plan review; and parcel maps plan review.

The health district is anticipating that these suspended services will be operational soon, and the environmental health staff does not foresee an adverse impact on any local businesses.

KIWANIS CLUB WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS

The Kiwanis Club of North Las Vegas, a chapter of the international service organization, is scheduled to meet at 6:15 p.m. each Tuesday at T.G.I. Friday's in Aliante Station, 7300 Aliante Parkway.

Club community projects have included canned food drives, car shows, kites in the park events and charity fundraisers.

TEXT CAMPAIGN TO BENEFIT THE SHADE TREE

Text and support the victims of domestic violence assisted by the Shade Tree, 1 W. Owens Ave.

The "Text to Give" campaign launched Feb. 14. Donors can text "TST" to 501501 and donate $10. Donors who wish to gift a larger amount can text "TST" to 91011.

All of the donation goes directly to the Shade Tree, a nonprofit assisting victims of domestic violence.

GRIEF CAMP COMING JULY 20-22 TO LOVELL CANYON

Camp Mariposa, a grief camp, is scheduled for July 20-22 at Camp Potosi in Lovell Canyon southwest of Red Rock Canyon.

The camp is accepting applications from children 7 to 12 who have lost a loved one.

It is partially funded through grants from Cox Communications and Speedway Children's Charities. There is no cost to families of accepted campers. A $25 refundable deposit is requested with the application in order to reserve a space. Reservations should be received by June 22.

CAMP REGISTRATION OPENED

Open registration for Clark County Parks and Recreation's summer overnight camps in July is ongoing.

The price is $400 per child.

This fee includes all meals, snacks, activities, supplies and an official camp T-shirt. Omni Discovery Camp, for ages 8 to 12, is set to take place from July 22-27, and the On the Edge Camp, for ages 13 to 15, is set for July 15-20.

Both camps will take place at Camp Lee Canyon, about 30 minutes from North Las Vegas.

4-H CAMP PLANNED AT LAKE TAHOE

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Southern Area's 4-H camp is planned for July 29-Aug. 4 at the Nevada State 4-H Camp at Lake Tahoe. Registration is open to campers 9 to 15 until the camp is full.
