The Assembly Committee on Education held a hearing Thursday on a bill that would lift a 2019 mandate to provide a plan before removing a student from a classroom or school.
President Joe Biden landed in Las Vegas on Tuesday evening and attended a private Democratic National Committee reception and fundraiser.
“What I’m asking for in this particular bill is really to try and protect those kids who are nonverbal, who aren’t really able to communicate what’s been going on with them in the classroom,” said Sen. Scott Hammond, R-Las Vegas.
There would be fewer university regents under a bill discussed in the Nevada Legislature on Thursday, which would reduce membership from 13 to nine members.
Superintendents proposed legislation Friday that would create a school modernization commission and would increase the power of local school districts.
A day after lawmakers were sworn in, the Assembly Education Committee began meeting to review the scope of the work they will do during the session.
Gov. Joe Lombardo is calling for a review of Nevada’s public school district’s finances, according to an executive order signed Monday.
Leaders from both parties said education was a top priority as lawmakers gather in Carson City for the 82nd biennial legislative session.
Legislative leaders made the announcement in the wake of Gov. Lombardo’s State of the State speech in which he pledged to increase per-pupil spending in Nevada.
Opportunity scholarships, alternative education and even education savings accounts may be on the table as the 2023 Legislature convenes.
Lawyers for a group that campaigned to break up the Clark County School District but failed to get the initiative before the Nevada Legislature last year are suing a signature-gathering company that failed to collect enough valid signatures.
The Clark County Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to adopt an ordinance that will allow for creating community education advisory boards.
The state panel received complaints and investigated two Nevada System of Higher Education regents — Cathy McAdoo and Patrick Carter.
Unofficial election results posted Wednesday show two incumbents will lose seats on the Clark County School District Board of Trustees, while four new regents will represent Southern Nevada on the Nevada System of Higher Education.
