As lawmakers strive to construct a budget for Nevada’s public schools through funding takeaways and givebacks, teachers with jobs and salaries at stake are bracing for the fallout.
Over the protests of Republicans, the Senate Education Committee approved a bill Friday to allow high school seniors to secure full-fledged diplomas even if they fall a couple of points short of the standards on one section of the proficiency exam.
To deal with proposed budget cuts, higher education leaders are considering a host of options, including merging Nevada State College into UNLV. Some programs are on the chopping block, too.
Great Basin College, based in Elko in northeastern Nevada, serves an area the size of Georgia. But the school faces a cloudy future as state budget cuts loom.
