Washoe schools chief says district will still trim its budget

RENO -- Washoe County School District Superintendent Heath Morrison says the state's second biggest district will proceed with its original budget-cutting plans, despite an extra $22 million in state funding.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the district plans to cut $35 million the next fiscal year and another $53 million the year after that unless Nevada's economy improves.

The added funding stems from a budget deal reached Wednesday between Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval and the Democratic-controlled Legislature.

Morrison says the added funding was welcome, but it will still mean painful cuts for the district during the next two years.

While district officials will largely avoid making layoffs, he says schools will likely suffer with larger classroom sizes and in support services.
