12-year-old girl dies after being struck by car

A 12-year-old girl died after being struck by a car near Sahara Avenue and Town Center Drive on Monday night, Las Vegas police said.

Officers responded about 8:20 p.m. to the intersection of Blue Willow Lane and Sandstone Bluffs Drive. The girl was trick-or-treating with a group of other children, police said, but no one else was struck.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene for the investigation, which is still ongoing, police said.

Fifteen-year-old Aaron Francois was trick-or-treating with his brother when he witnessed the collision. He said the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed in an area where the posted limit is 25 mph. He was unsure whether the girl was in a crosswalk.

After she was hit, Francois heard a young boy scream, "That's my cousin, that's my cousin!" He said he held the boy and told him to pray.

The incident marks the third auto-pedestrian fatality in recent days.

Amelia "Mia" Decker, 6, died three days after being struck in a crosswalk Oct. 21 in North Las Vegas. Her two friends were critically injured, including 5-year-old Alyssa Mowery who remains hospitalized.

A 15-year-old Henderson boy, Lucas Ruiz-Brenes, died Sunday after a driver facing a felony DUI charge crashed into him the night before on Center Street near Dogwood Street.
