Assembly candidate faces residency hearing Monday

A Democratic candidate for Assembly will have to defend his eligibility for office just hours before Election Day.

Andrew Martin, a candidate for Assembly District 9 in the southwestern Las Vegas Valley, is scheduled to appear Monday in Clark County District Court in response to a residency challenge.

Martin's opponent, Republican Kelly Hurst, says Martin does not live in the district. Hurst says Martin actually lives in a home he owns outside the district, and the condominium he owns in the district doesn't count as his residence.

"It is an opportunity to clarify the situation, and I welcome the opportunity," Martin said Friday. "It is very simple. I own two properties. I use one as my home, the condo, and the other as my office."

Martin is scheduled to appear at 3:30 p.m. before Judge Rob Bare.

The district has about 2,900 more Democrats than Republicans. Martin listed an address of 7345 S. Durango Drive when he filed for the seat, now held by Tick Segerblom, a candidate for the state Senate. Hurst and his attorney, Frank Cremen, said Martin never moved into that condo.
