Baby who died after mother hit by car near Strip identified

A baby who was born prematurely after its mother was hit by a car near the Strip in June has been identified.

He is Romeo Vargas, the Clark County coroner’s office said. Romeo was just a day old when he died of “extreme prematurity, placental abruption and maternal blunt force due to auto-pedestrian accident,” the coroner’s office said.

On June 26, Romeo’s mother, 27-year-old Nancy Ojeda, was walking outside of a marked crosswalk on Circus Circus Drive, near Las Vegas Boulevard, when she was struck by a car about 9:50 p.m., Las Vegas police said.

Ojeda, who was six months pregnant, was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition and gave birth to Romeo, police said. She died Friday night.

The driver, a 24-year-old man, was not injured and stayed at the scene.
