Child drowns in downtown Las Vegas pool

Las Vegas police say a 1-year-old boy died Wednesday afternoon in an apparent drowning in a backyard pool.

Police said they received a call at 2:24 p.m. that a boy was transported to Valley Hospital in critical condition. He died later in the afternoon, and the death was announced shortly before 4 p.m.

The child was brought to the hospital by his mother from her home in the 1900 block of Fontana Avenue, east of Rancho Drive near downtown.

Police spokeswoman Laura Meltzer said the child's mother might have lost track of her son for about five minutes. Meltzer said the backyard pool has a fence around it.

Meltzer said as the temperatures increase, parents need to be extra attentive to their children near pools.

"None of these measures can take place of constant adult supervision when we're talking about young children," she said.

The death remains under investigation.
